  • Peavy shuts down struggling Tigers 8-0 (AP)

    Jake Peavy delivered the kind of performance the Detroit Tigers desperately need. Peavy delayed Detroit's chance to move closer to the AL Central title, pitching the Chicago White Sox past the slumping Tigers 8-0 Friday night. Detroit's lead was cut to one game by Minnesota, which beat Kansas City 10-7.

  • Rams to start Boller for injured Bulger (AP)

    Kyle Boller will make his first start at quarterback for the St. Louis Rams on Sunday as Marc Bulger rests his injured shoulder. Coach Steve Spagnuolo said Friday that if Bulger dresses for the game, it will be as the third quarterback. Rookie Keith Null will be the backup. Bulger did not throw during Friday's practice and is listed as questionable for the game at NFC West rival San Francisco…

  • Arenas practices, finger still issue (AP)

    Gilbert Arenas took part in five-on-five halfcourt drills at Washington Wizards practice on Friday after sitting out scrimmages the previous two days. Wizards first-year coach Flip Saunders says the oft-injured Arenas has taken part in just about everything during training camp but a dislocated finger sidelined him for the scrimmages.

  • Phillies consider replacements for Lidge (AP)

    The Philadelphia Phillies suddenly are auditioning potential replacements for struggling closer Brad Lidge and juggling their rotation with Pedro Martinez still bothered by a stiff neck. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Friday that the World Series champions will consider other options for closing games, adding that manager Charlie Manuel could keep Lidge in the mix.

  • Warriors coach Nelson to embrace Jackson (AP)

    Coach Don Nelson and the Golden State Warriors will consider trading disgruntled star Stephen Jackson if the team can find the right situation. "If it's good for the team, we'll look at it," Nelson said Friday. "It has nothing to do with Jack or a request. But we'll accommodate him if we can, if it's good for him and it's good for us we'd certainly look at it.

  • Wallace likely to start for Hasselbeck (AP)

    Matt Hasselbeck granted one little guy his wish Friday. He couldn't grant all other Seahawks fans theirs. Hasselbeck missed a third consecutive practice day because of a broken rib, so the Seahawks expect backup Seneca Wallace to start at quarterback for the three-time Pro Bowl passer on Sunday against Chicago.

  • Fired ref on list of camp replacements (AP)

    A referee who was previously fired by the NBA is among the group of replacements who have agreed to participate in training camp next week. Michael Henderson is one of 44 who was sent an e-mail from the NBA's referees operations department on Friday. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the e-mail, which provides the replacements with details about the meetings, scheduled to begin Thursday…

  • Halladay’s 1-hitter ends Yanks’ run at 7 (AP)

    After three straight subpar starts, Roy Halladay was back to being dominant Friday. Halladay pitched a one-hitter to snap a three-start losing streak and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees 6-0, ending New York's winning streak at seven games.   • Wolves sign PG Sessions to offer sheet (AP)

    The Minnesota Timberwolves wasted little time moving on after being rebuffed by Ricky Rubio. Two days after the 18-year-old point guard backed out of a deal to join the Timberwolves this season, Minnesota signed restricted free agent Ramon Sessions to an offer sheet Friday. The Milwaukee Bucks will have seven days to match the four-year, $16 million offer.

  • Angels acquire LHP Kazmir from Rays (AP)

Kazmir was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night, Aug. 28, 2009, giving the AL West leaders a major boost to their unsteady rotation. The Angels acquired Kazmir, a two-time All-Star, for two minor leaguers and a player to be named. The left-hander was 8-7 with a 5.92 ERA this season for the defending AL champion Rays.

    The Los Angeles Angels did more than just upgrade their unsteady rotation. They added a two-time All-Star who's only 25 years old. Scott Kazmir was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the AL West leaders Friday night, a major move for a high-scoring team that already had World Series aspirations. The Angels landed Kazmir for two minor leaguers and a player to be named.
