  • Colts beat Texans 20-17 to stay unbeaten (AP)

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Clint Session(notes) runs the ball after intercepting a pass from Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub(notes) in the fourth quarter of an NFL football game in Indianapolis, Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009. The Colts won 20-17.

The Colts have no problems with close games — as long as they keep winning them. Peyton Manning delivered another milestone performance, Joseph Addai produced a second straight winning score, and the Colts found another unconventional way to win when Houston's Kris Brown missed a 42-yard field goal as time expired, keeping Indy's winning streak intact 20-17.

Chicago Bulls' John Salmons(notes), right, waits for Cleveland Cavaliers' Delonte West(notes), left, and Cleveland Cavaliers' Anderson Varejao(notes), of Brazil, to move before shooting in the fourth quarter of an NBA basketball game, Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, in Cleveland. The Bulls won 86-85.

For a split second, LeBron James appeared to be on his way to bailing out the Cleveland Cavaliers once more. Luol Deng and Joakim Noah put a stop to that. Chicago's forwards double teamed James and denied the superstar on a drive in the final seconds as the Chicago Bulls ended Cleveland's three-game winning streak with an 86-85 win Thursday night, the Cavaliers' second home loss already…

  • Secretary Causes Pepsico to lose $1.2 Billion Dollar Lawsuit

It’s not easy to work for me: I can be demanding, overly focused and intense about everything I do. I believe that reaching extraordinary goals requires you to always put forth extraordinary effort. Many interns have come and gone, after realizing that they can’t keep up with our crazy pace. The ones who make it through the storm become invaluable parts of my family; like body parts or internal organs. I truly can’t live without them.

That is why I cringed when I saw the recent story about how Pepsico lost a $1.26 Billion dollar judgment because the secretary forgot to pass the paperwork onto the appropriate people. As a result, the company lost the lawsuit on a default judgment for failing to appear in court.

Apparently, it was a simple oversight that could have happened to anyone. But I am sure that the secretary is in hot water and probably even fired. Cases like this are reminders of some important principles you should remember when you are in business for yourself or working for another person.

    1) Trust is everything. For me, trust starts on the first day of the job interview. If someone arrives late, that means that I can’t even trust them to get to meetings on time. If I can’t trust you to get to meetings on time, then there is no way on earth that I am going to trust you with a valuable contract. Consistency builds trust. You must always find a way to be consistent when working with or working for other people.

    2) You are only as good as the people who represent you. This statement implies two things: That you should get good people around you and that you should respect those who work for you. Hiring lazy relatives or friends who aren’t disciplined enough to do the job is a recipe for disaster. I have plenty of friends with whom I have good relationships, but I would never do business with them because I know that some of them are unreliable. Those who I choose to be part of my team are not reminded that I am the “big boss.” Instead, I let them know that I am in charge, while showing appreciation for their efforts every chance I get. Being respectful of others is how you truly earn respect without having to step on people in order to maintain power. If you rule with an iron fist, your subordinates will eventually plot to destroy you.

    3) Excuses need not apply. There are two types of people in this world: those who deliver excuses and those who deliver results. All of us run into obstacles, but the most effective people are the ones who find a way around those obstacles to get the job done. Those who regularly deliver a basket of excuses to somehow exclude them from their assignment are going to be replaced by someone who simply gets the job done. The truth is that in the world of business, even if you have a good excuse, the client is going to still take their business away from you. That’s just the truth.

    4) Learn to forgive. My most trusted partners and subordinates have made horrible mistakes and cost me money in the process. While my first temptation was to raise the fire of hell, I realized early on that this was not the best long-term solution. Instead, I simply ate the loss and assertively pursued a joint remedy for the problem at hand. Having power doesn’t mean that brute force tactics are always the best strategy. You might lose someone valuable if you don’t know when to show compassion. A good employee already feels bad enough about their mistake; you don’t have to rub it in further.

I am not sure how Pepsico is handling the situation with the secretary, since some excuses are simply unforgivable. But while we can all understand being outraged by losing a billion dollars, we should also know not to sweat the small stuff.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban gives forward Dirk Nowitzki(notes) a look during the second half of their NBA basketball game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, in Los Angeles.

The Dallas Mavericks surprised themselves in a bad way with a season-opening loss at home. Then they hit the road and stunned the defending NBA champions. Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points and the Mavs were 25 of 32 from the free throw line, snapping a six-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Lakers with a 94-80 victory Friday night.

Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose(notes), left, looks to a pass against San Antonio Spurs' Tim Duncan(notes) during the third quarter of an NBA basketball game in Chicago, Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009.

Derrick Rose was so antsy and "geeked up" to get back on the court he had to blast the music on his way to the arena. Once he arrived, he certainly seemed in tune. Or at least close. Rose scored 13 points and had seven assists to lead the balanced Chicago Bulls to an impressive 92-85 season-opening victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday night.

  • Chris Rock Gets Real Sensitive About AOL and Good Hair

Maybe everybody hates Chris, but I don’t hate him at all. Most of us know Chris Rock for the genius that he is, and the way he intelligently and hilariously describes the world around us. So, you can imagine my dismay when I got a call from Charlamagne Tha God, morning host for 100.3 “The Beat” in Philadelphia, who told me that Chris Rock had some choice words for AOL Black Voices and the criticism he has received for his film, “Good Hair.”

Chris seemed to feel that those claiming that the movie bombed at the box office were incorrect, since the film was only released in a few theaters. He even (accurately) explains that saying his film bombed is like “comparing the movie ‘He Got Game’ to ‘Star Wars’.” Good point. Here are some other issues that Chris brought up and how some of these issues relate to wealth, power and ownership.

Chris discusses how difficult it is to do shows, commentary and films for a black audience. This is true, given that African American audiences are not as large as non-black and global audiences. In fact, when Ice Cube (my favorite rapper) released “Janky Promoters,” one of the statements made by an executive at the studio was that black movies have almost no global sales market. I am not sure if this was a racist fact or not, but it certainly is a fact.

Chris’ interview (below) was quite intriguing for a number of reasons:

    1) He was criticized for saying that Oprah looks like a slave in one of her pictures. He says that he wasn’t saying that she looks like a slave (Oprah is one of his wealthy and powerful friends, he wouldn’t be that stupid – I learned firsthand about the backlash you can get from criticizing Oprah); he was saying that the picture was so old that it looked like a slave picture.

    2) Chris seemed incredibly emotional and highly flustered in the interview. I am not sure if this is an act, but I certainly hope it is. Chris Rock is a vet in the game, and I’d be shocked that he would be so sensitive about criticism for his film. Chris sounds like he needs a hug from his mama. If his mama is not available, he can borrow mine.

    3) Chris mentions in film that black men can be portrayed any old way, while people seem very sensitive to any portrayals of black women that are in the least bit critical. I actually agree with Chris when he says that anyone who criticizes his film needs to see it first. Also, being critical of black women is not exactly a popular thing to do – I find it interesting that all the problems of the black family and black relationships mentioned in Essence Magazine tend to be blamed almost entirely on men. The truth is that in a community, it takes two genders to Tango.

    4) Chris is a businessman: He mentioned that he would not release a film about black women if black women didn’t like it. During survey testing, he claims that 99 out of 100 black women like the film. The lesson here is that most products are not released to the public unless they are fully market tested. Also, the size and scope of the African American market makes room for a small number of films. At the same time, it is my hope that Chris Rock and others will take ownership of the film making process to ensure that more movies are made for black audiences, using appropriate images. Anyone who saw the “ghetto girl” in the cinematic flop “Couples Retreat” knows what I’m talking about.

    5) He seems to have a bit of a beef with AOL Black Voices. When asked about critical comments that Chris received in AOL BV, the entertainer went back into “Need-a-hug-from-mama” mode. I have two things to say to Chris: First, AOL Black Voices is PLURAL, implying that there is no one voice, but many who represent a variety of viewpoints. I, for one, think that Chris Rock’s work is outstanding, but I don’t represent all opinions on this site. Secondly, if Chris has a concern with comments that have been made, he should do what he did today – stand up for himself!

In China, they have a saying, “The fattest pig will always get slaughtered.” Chris my man, you’re the fat pig – so don’t be surprised when the haters come out to turn you into pork chops. But make sure you also remember that everybody doesn’t hate Chris, a lot of people think you’re pretty cool.

  • ‘Bosses Day’: Are You Celebrating National Boss Day 2009 on Friday?

A day for bosses? Really? Well, get ready, as it is now the eve of Boss Day 2009.

I personally have never heard of National Boss Day, which will be celebrated this year on Friday, October 16. Even though “bosses day” (as it is called by some) was created way back in 1958 by a woman named Patricia Bays Haroski, this is definitely not your typical Hallmark occasion. Many people hate their bosses, and see no reason to give them a special day.

But some writers are re-framing National Boss Day in 2009 as an important time to consider the immense pressures business leaders of today are facing given the economic climate.

Between having to lay off good employees, to being expected to show results with diminishing resources, bosses in 2009 have to work harder than ever to stay positive while motivating their people. Author Bob Nelson believes that a good boss deserves praise for working well under such circumstances, citing these characteristics as those that make awesome bosses, no matter what the decade (via PRNewswire):

    1. A clear and compelling direction: Bosses need to inspire their employees to be excited about their work.
    2. Direct, open and honest communication: Frequent and effective communication is the leading way to show employees trust and respect.
    3. Employee involvement and initiative: Managers need to ask employees for their ideas.
    4. Employee autonomy, flexibility and support: Employees need a say in how they do their work.
    5. Career growth and development: Tough times provide many opportunities for employees to take on additional responsibilities.
    6. Recognition and rewards for high performance: During down times, the need for employees to feel valued for their efforts greatly increases.

You can read more about what makes a great boss in 2009 in Nelson’s new book, ‘Keeping Up in a Down Economy: What the Best Companies Do to Get Results in Tough Times.’

      Cruise Ship Jobs

On one level, cruise ship jobs seem amazingly glamorous. After all, employees receive free food, accomodations, medical care, airline tickets and uniforms. They often don’t have to pay taxes, get discounted cruise rates for family members, and can travel for free. As many cruise ship job sites point out, passengers pay thousands of dollars per week to see the same sites that employees enjoy for free.

On the other hand, cruise ships can get claustrophobic after a while, and many jobs are far from wonderful. After all, when somebody gets seasick, a cruise ship employee has to clean it up, and chances are that the captain won’t be the one wielding the mop. Still, cruise ships offer a dizzying array of jobs, a chance to escape to exotic climes, and a steady income, most of which can be banked. Anchors aweigh!

      The Military

Although the military is reaching its enlistment quotas for the first time in years, it still offers excellent bonuses and outstanding benefits. According to Military Hub, the maximum bonus for new recruits is $40,000, while reservists can get $20,000 for five years of service. Other bonuses are available for military personnel who intend to buy a new home or start a business. For active duty soldiers who choose to re-enlist, bonuses can be as high as $90,000.

Military members receive massively subsidized medical and dental care, subsidized education, and various housing allowances. They also have access to reduced-rate car insurance and life insurance, credit union membership, inexpensive military stores, and a host of other benefits.

      Park Rangers

Full-time Park Rangers earn a salary of between $24,000 and $37,000 and often receive free housing, in addition to other benefits. Unfortunately, these jobs are tenured and competition is fierce. In addition to a bachelor’s degree in park management, natural history, forestry, or a related major, applicants need extensive experience as seasonal rangers or interns.

On the bright side, there are a variety of seasonal jobs available from the National Park Service. The education and experience required depends on the position, and interested parties can apply at USAJOBS, the US Federal government’s job site. While park ranger jobs were cut after 2006, it seems likely that these could be among the first positions to benefit from the US government’s stimulus plan.

      Nanny

Salaries for live-in nannies vary wildly, depending upon the area, the family, and the nanny’s qualifications. In general, nannies in major cities get $18-20 per hour, while live-in childcare in less costly areas is about half that. Entry-level nannies with high school degrees can expect roughly $400 per week, while experienced, trained nannies can expect $1000 per week or more.

While live-in nannies may not qualify for time-and-a-half overtime wages, they still are legally entitled to time off and other benefits. Many nannies get complete compensation packages, including subsidized health insurance, paid vacations, gym memberships, cell phones, and educational allowances.

Best of all, you get to deal with the wonderful drama of a household full of college girls!

      Ranch Hand

Running away to work on a farm is one of the classic escapist American fantasies. While the dude ranches of the nineteenth century have almost disappeared, there is still a huge livestock industry and plenty of jobs for people with experience in animal husbandry. Depending on the type of ranch, workers can do a wide variety of jobs, including training horses, caring for livestock, taking care of children or young adults, performing general farm work, maintaining corrals, and cooking. While education for this work is generally vocational, some areas will train employees to do the specialized jobs that they require. Depending on the position, the area, the employer, and your level of knowledge, pay and benefits can range wildly. Ranch Work is a good starting place to get a feeling for available jobs, salary possibilities, and benefits involved.

      Camp Counselor

If you sometimes find yourself obsessively watching Meatballs, then camp work might be perfect for you. While salaries vary based on position and experience, you can expect to make a couple of hundred dollars per week, in addition to room, board, and free use of recreational facilities. Positions include lifeguard, counselor, kitchen staff, administrative staff, nursing staff, and maintenance staff, and are available across the country. Added benefits include fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a 50% chance of waking up with your hand in a pot of warm water!

      Peace Corps

In addition to offering a solid line on a resume, a stint in the Peace Corps provides a complete care package. While in the corps, volunteers are taught a foreign language, receive comprehensive medical and dental care, draw a liberal living allowance, and have two days of paid vacation per month. Students are allowed to defer or even partially cancel their student loans.

Once volunteers return from their service, the program helps them readjust to society with a $6,000 bonus, fast-tracking into government careers, and other job placement help. Those who want to continue their education can combine their service with a graduate program or can join the Fellows/USA program, which offers scholarships or reduced tuition in return for a commitment to work in an under-served US community.

      Home Health Care Aide

With the Baby Boomer generation’s ongoing march into old age, the home health care industry is poised to enjoy almost explosive growth. Home health care aids help elderly, ill, and mentally disabled people to do all the things necessary to live at home. This can include cooking, cleaning, planning meals, doing laundry, shopping, changing bed linens, and other household tasks. Certification for this job varies from state-to-state. In some areas, applicants simply learn on the job, while other states require extensive background checks and more formal training. Median wages are $8.54 per hour, going up to over $11. In most cases, this isn’t a live-in job.

Do your bosses exhibit these traits? If so, consider yourself lucky and honor them this Friday on National Boss Day 2009. If business managers ever deserved a day for keeping things running, it is during this turbulent era.

  • Dr Boyce and Rev. Al Sharpton Discuss Couples, Money and Michael Vick

This week on “Keeping it Real with Rev. Al Sharpton,” the good reverend and I discussed some issues that many people might find interesting. First, there was the conversation about love and money. Most of us know that money matters in life. We tend to think about money every day and a good way to end up in the dumps is to have someone take your money away from you. Money is also a weapon of mass destruction in many relationships, especially in the African American community. And just for the record, Rev. Al stands firm that there is nothing to his rumored relationship with Lisa Raye. If only I were privileged enough to have people think that I had a thing for Lisa Raye….now THAT would make my day!
Our second topic of discussion was Michael Vick. I personally believe that in spite of media reports to the contrary, Nike is still waiting in the wings to sign Vick to a real deal, because Vick has always been the real deal among NFL athletes. The great challenge for Vick is that he has to start from scratch to rebuild his respectability as a top notch quarterback. He also has to let that ‘dog fighting’ issue get behind him.

I recently did an online webchat about Michael Vick, which explores the similarities between Michael Vick and Jack Johnson, the first African American heavyweight champion of the world. You’ll notice that the way America has vilified black male athletes is nothing new to our country – there is a long history behind it.

The conversation with Rev. Al is below. Enjoy!

  • The Problem With Amber Rose

    Posted by: Russell Simmons

I noticed that every time we post a story about Amber Rose, it gets lots of attention. People have very strong opinions…they either hate her or love her. Some people (the haters) get upset because we, the editors of Global Grind, can’t find a lot of bad things to say about her. We leave that for sites that are less creative and less responsible.

Anyhow, when I closely examine the “Amber” phenomenon, I can’t see what she’s done to hurt the planet, the animals or the people. So sorry haters, I really can’t really find fault with her. One thing good spiritual people should be good at is practicing “non judgment.” So as long as Datwon (the COO of Global Grind) allows me to be involved and be Editorial Director of Global Grind, we are gonna try to stay positive. I’m gonna continue to see my team executing my view or if not, people here will get fired!!! But mostly they will be given another chance…but if it
don’t work out… fired. Ok, back to the point. The best reason to practice disdain for something or someone is that it hurts your spirit. Maybe sometimes you don’t want those actions that are performed by another to become your own? And the best way to do that is to point
fingers? I noticed that the greatest haters of gays are mostly frustrated gays themselves…or maybe in Amber’s case, the sexy girl in you wants to walk around your party in a swimsuit…but that’s a fantasy because you are way too afraid to do that.

I believe that most people who become popular are just trying to make their way, and the constant negative pressure from the media tearing them down can sometimes destroy their self image, ruin their chances of becoming more successful or more importantly, destroy their chances of achieving lasting happiness. Here’s a scenario seldom discussed. The pop culture that has 3 million people following Ashton Kutcher on twitter, but only 15 thousand following His Holiness, the Dali Lama could be subject to some judgment? But I guess as a good yogi, I should look past this and pray that we find the good in Ashton, Puff, Kim Kardashian, Amber Rose or any entertainer or celebrity that stole our focus and now has such a powerful affect on our society. We, the collective consciousness, choose Hulk Hogan, Lil Wayne, Paris Hilton, Jay-Z or Amber Rose to focus our attention on, so why does it make us feel so
    good to tear them down?

Advice. Practice living a full life. Use your Bible, Koran, Torah, yoga sutras, Buddhist scripture as YOUR guide. Be the best you can be. Tearing other people down will not make you a better Christian, Muslim or Jew. But finding the good in them and protecting them and wishing them well, will!! Try not to pass out bad energy or judgment because the karmic affect is more devastating to your self-image and happiness than it is to theirs’.

PS. I’m not holier than anyone reading this…just pointing out some things that I noticed in me that may be operating in you.

    Dating Tips for Black Singles
These dating tips for Black singles can be applied to two Black people dating one another or a Black person having a date with someone from a different ethnic background. The fact of the matter is that by and large dating tips for Black singles are pretty much the same as for any other group of people be they Asian, Jewish or whatever.

Like it or not you know the guy you’re dating is going to need his ego boosting. It’s an odd fact but men out on dates seem to spend more time trying to get their own ego boosted than they will think about complementing you. Maybe it’s because they are actually unsure of themselves or maybe it’s just the way they’re programmed; but the ‘peacock’ idea of a guy out on a date is very real. Now constantly saying how much you admire what they’re wearing or how good they are at – whatever it is you’ve chosen to do; lets say bowling or dancing or skating – is one way to boost their ego. However, it needs doing succinctly or you could end up just sounding sycophantic. Let him know that you value the person not the action. Of course this is tricky to do on the first few dates as you probably won’t know the date that well. However, a dating tip for Black single women is when making a complement; make one that incorporates another personality trait as this will really act as a double ego boost. For example, rather than saying “great bowling” say something like “great bowling, I can see you’re really thinking about what you’re doing”. Get the idea? Another dating tip for Black single women can be a real tester, but; don’t phone him after the first date, if you’re really keen on him – let him do the chasing and call you first. He’ll love the idea of ‘being in a chase’ and you’ll know just how keen he is on you by how quickly he wants to see you again. Whilst some guys would be flattered that you’ve phoned them others could go all cool towards you thinking that you’re getting ‘clingy’ with them. Be strong – and wait for him to call you – then you can start reeling him in.

Don’t take offense guys, and this comment is not just a dating tip for Black single men – but all men. You might think it’s all manly and heroic to turn up for a date straight from the Gym. In itself that’s OK – but don’t cut the time so short that you leave for your date before showering. Yes a woman will find the male pheromones you give off attractive. Unfortunately dried and stale perspiration will have the opposite effect. Another dating tip for single Black men is, if you have to meet up with your date straight from work and whether or not it’s due to unforeseen circumstances, apologize for not having had the time to get home and change first. You don’t need to say anymore than that – but you are making it clear to your date that you’re not turning up at your date intentionally without first having had the chance to shower and change. She’ll admire and respect you much more for those few words. Some men need the next tip and some don’t, but of all the dating tips for Black singles – a guy mustn’t forget to complement his date on something, and preferably as soon as he sees her and then remember to complement her throughout the date. Most Black guys out on a date really try to impress and invariably like it when their date complements them. The same is true for your date, so don’t get so wrapped up in yourself that you forget to complement her. Saying something like “you look wonderful tonight” will always go down well. However, to avoid keep repeating yourself pay attention to the conversations you’re having and pick up on the clues and prompts that are in it for you to find something to complement her on. An easy dating tip for Black single men here would be: in a conversation about hair just saying something like “I love the way you’ve done your hair tonight” – will be great.

  • Four Years After Katrina: Have We Failed New Orleans?

    Posted by: www.huffingtonpost.com

Shelia Phillips doesn’t see the New Orleans that Mayor Ray Nagin talks about, the one on its way to having just as many people and a more diverse economy than it did before Hurricane Katrina. How could she?

From the front porch of her house in the devastated Lower 9th Ward, it’s hard to see past the vegetation slowly swallowing the property across the way. Nearby homes are boarded up or still bear the fading tattoos left by search and rescue teams nearly four years ago. The fence around a playground a few blocks down is padlocked.

“I just want to see people again,” she said recently, swatting bugs in the muggy heat.
