  • DC Sniper Executed: Pronounced Dead At 9:11

    The mastermind of the 2002 sniper attacks that killed 10 in the Washington, D.C., region has been executed.

    A prison spokesman says John Allen Muhammad died by injection at 9:11 p.m. Tuesday at Greensville Correctional Center.

    Muhammad was executed for killing Dean Harold Meyers at a gas station during the spree that terrorized Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., over a three-week period. His teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, was sentenced to life in prison.

    Prison spokesman Larry Traylor says Muhammad had no final words. He says he didn’t hear him utter a word during the execution.

     

  • Appeals court: Vick can keep $16M bonus (AP)

    A federal appeals court is backing the judge who ruled against the NFL and let quarterback Michael Vick keep more than $16 million in roster bonuses from the Atlanta Falcons. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday affirmed Judge David Doty's order saying Vick had already earned the bonuses before his dogfighting conviction, so the money wasn't subject to forfeiture.

    The Dallas Mavericks' offense barely had a pulse for most of three quarters. Then Dirk Nowitzki decided to take control. Nowitzki scored a club-record 29 of his 40 points during a frantic fourth-quarter comeback and the Mavericks beat the Utah Jazz 96-85 on Tuesday night. Nowitzki broke the franchise record of 24 points in any quarter set by Mark Aguirre against Denver on March 24, 1984.

  • Phils’ Victorino questionable for Game 6 (AP)

    Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino was examined by doctors Tuesday and manager Charlie Manuel said he isn't sure if he'll be able to play in Game 6 of the World Series on Wednesday night. Victorino was struck on his right index finger by an A.J. Burnett fastball in the first inning of Philadelphia's 8-6 victory over the New York Yankees on Monday night.

  • Seahawks cut James, 10th all-time rusher (AP)

    The Edgerrin James experiment in Seattle is over. The struggling Seahawks cut ties with James on Tuesday, releasing the backup running back who never provided the pop Seattle hoped to get when it signed the 31-year-old in late August. James' release was one of a handful of moves Seattle made two days after a lackluster 38-17 loss that dropped the Seahawks to 2-5.

  • Snyder: ‘Skins have ‘let everyone down’ (AP)

    Dan Snyder is embarrassed. He feels terrible. He's also hurt, frustrated and apologetic. Name a downbeat adjective, and he's all over it. The Washington Redskins owner made some rare in-season comments about his team Tuesday, speaking at an event to celebrate the franchise's charitable program to renovate football fields at Maryland high schools.

  • Blue Jays CF Wells to have wrist surgery (AP)

    Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells will have surgery next week to repair damaged cartilage in his left wrist. The team announced Tuesday that Wells is expected to be ready in time for spring training. Wells, who is entering the third season of a seven-year, $126-million contract extension, hit .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs in 158 games last season.

  • Chiefs bar RB Johnson over gay slur (AP)

    Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson issued his second apology in 12 months Tuesday and was told to stay away from the team while the NFL and the Chiefs complete their investigation into his use of a gay slur. As Johnson was releasing his apology, a national gay rights advocacy organization called on the league and the team to take disciplinary action against the two-time Pro Bowler.

    Jason Campbell will remain the Washington Redskins starting quarterback. Coach Jim Zorn said Tuesday on his ESPN980 radio show that he will stick with Campbell for Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Campbell was benched at halftime of Sunday's 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

    Ned Colletti agreed to a long-term extension Tuesday to stay on as general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Under him, the team has reached the postseason in three of his four seasons, the first time a Dodgers GM has accomplished that feat. Colletti joins New York's Brian Cashman and Boston's Theo Epstein in doing so among active GMs.

  • Wolves’ Love to get hand surgery Tuesday (AP)

    Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Love has been scheduled for surgery on his broken left hand. Love will have the operation in New York on Tuesday to fix a fracture in the fourth metacarpal bone in his shooting hand. The second-year player suffered the injury on a rebound last Friday in a preseason game at Chicago.

  • Man Cleared After 9 Years in Prison

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 14) — Prosecutors are saying a Kentucky man who served about nine years in prison for a shooting death and robbery is innocent.

    Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney David Stengel said Tuesday that Edwin A. Chandler was innocent of the 1993 slaying of a convenience store clerk. Another man has been indicted in the killing.
