    Jed Hoyer was once co-general manager of the Boston Red Sox for 44 days after Theo Epstein walked away from the job. Now Hoyer has a GM gig of his own. The San Diego Padres have hired Hoyer as their new general manager, a person with knowledge of the situation said Saturday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement won't be until Monday.

    Eddie Royal was running so fast that even his brown-and-white striped socks were a blur. Royal became the first player in Broncos history to return a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in the same game, leading undefeated Denver to a wild 34-23 win over the San Diego Chargers on Monday night. Royal thinks one of the Chargers got a hand on him during his 93-yard kickoff return in the first quarter.

  • Dolphins QB Pennington out for season (AP)

    Chad Pennington's season officially ended with a trade that didn't involve him. The Miami Dolphins placed Pennington on the reserve-injured list to create a roster spot for quarterback Tyler Thigpen, who was acquired Tuesday from the Kansas City Chiefs for an undisclosed draft pick. Pennington hurt his right shoulder Sunday at San Diego, an injury that leaves his career in jeopardy.

  • Chargers’ Tomlinson out vs. Dolphins (AP)

    LaDainian Tomlinson has been ruled out of the San Diego Chargers' home game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the second straight game he'll miss due to a sprained right ankle. Tomlinson was hurt in a season-opening win at Oakland and missed last Sunday's home-opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

    San Diego Chargers star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman says he didn't harm a reality TV star who has accused him of choking and restraining her. Merriman says in a statement late Sunday that he was worried for the safety of Tila Tequila because she appeared to be intoxicated and he didn't want her to drive.

    Shawn Merriman of the San Diego Chargers was taken into custody by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department after an alleged altercation with Tila Tequila. San Diego Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call this morning at 3:45 AM. Tila claims she was “choked and physically restrained” by Merriman after she tried to leave his residence.
