    Yesterday, local New York students from PS 165 assisted Bounty, Russell Simmons, arts supporter Rev Run, designer and humanitarian Tory Burch and artist Amanda Williams in unveiling the completed Building Bounty-ful Bridges 33-foot painted mural of the traveling arts program sponsored by Bounty and Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.  The event took place at the Rush Arts Gallery in the Chelsea section of New York City.     The Metrodome erupted in a jet-like roar as Carlos Gomez zoomed home with the winning run to finish off an AL Central race — and a thrilling tiebreaker — that didn't want to end. Minnesota wouldn't quit, while the Detroit Tigers finished their historic fade. And there was little time for the Twins to celebrate, because the New York Yankees were waiting.

    Add yet another low to a long list of them for the Oakland Raiders during a seven-year run of losing. The Raiders' latest loss dropped them to 25-75 since the start of the 2003 season, the worst 100-game stretch in the team's 50-year history. And never in that half-century of football has the offense performed as poorly as it has to start this season.

    Browns rookie running back James Davis had a short run in his first NFL season. Davis, whose impressive exhibition season led to speculation about Jamal Lewis' future in Cleveland, will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.   • Tigers fail to clinch, lose 8-3 to Twins (AP)

    Those pesky Twins forced the Detroit Tigers to keep their champagne on ice. Scott Baker got plenty of run support and pitched Minnesota to a testy 8-3 victory on Thursday, preventing the Tigers from clinching their first division title in 22 years. Minnesota avoided elimination from the playoff race and moved within two games of the first-place Tigers with three to play.

  • Rays eliminated from playoff chase (AP)

    The Tampa Bay Rays will not get the chance for a second straight championship season. Jose Lopez hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Rays 4-3 Tuesday night, eliminating the defending AL champions from the postseason. "It's not the way we wanted this year to end," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said.

    This was vintage Pedro. Pedro Martinez tossed seven impressive innings to outpitch Tim Lincecum, Ryan Howard doubled in the tiebreaking run and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Thursday night. Martinez (3-0) struck out a season-high nine in his fifth start since signing with the Phillies during the All-Star break, allowing one run and five hits.

  • Giants working on deal to sign RHP Penny (AP)

    The San Francisco Giants are working on a deal to add right-hander Brad Penny to their rotation for the stretch run. A person with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press on Monday that details still needed to be finalized. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations with Penny were ongoing.
