  • Yankees Win 27th World Series!

    Baseball’s penthouse is again decorated with hand-painted silk pinstripe wallpaper. Nine years after their previous World Series title, the Yankees copped No. 27 last night when they spanked the defending champion Phillies, 7-3, in Game 6 at Yankee Stadium as a record gathering of 50,315 that didn’t include George Steinbrenner watched.

     

     

    And they looked very comfortable. Alex Rodriguez, who doesn’t have to answer any more questions about choking in the postseason, let loose with a river of victory tears and promised the parade will be a huge party.

    It’s that time again when the stores will be crowded with thousands of consumers all vying for the same toy, special sweater, hottest electronic device. How do you plan to purchase it?

    The current crumbling economy has sparked interest in a form of retail purchasing that became popular in the early 1900s, that of Lay Away. How does it work? It’s simple. You, the consumer would like to buy something but don’t have the money. All you do is make installment payments on the merchandise. The merchant stocks your item away until your last payment. You receive it once your tab is paid in full. Of course this is different than a credit card purchase which allows you to take home your intended product and make payments while using it.Although stores like Walmart did away with this form of procurement years ago, Kmart stayed in the game. Stores currently offering layaway plans are:

    • Marshalls (at select locations)
    • TJ Maxx (at select locations)
    • Benny’s (New England)
    • Sears ( through December 23)

    Plan on taking advantage of this service? Be sure to READ THE FINE PRINT.

    1. Get a copy of the store’s layaway policies
    2. Understand ALL of the policies – schedule of payments, rules regarding late fees, refund and exchange policies, markdowns on sale items, etc.
    3. Keep a good record and all receipts of payments (in case there are any disputes later).

    Until you make all the payments, the store has your merchandise AND your money. For this reason, I prefer to use cash, debit or credit cards OVER layaway, any day. Assuming I can pay off the balance in a short period of time. It’s true, credit card companies charge interest, therefore depending on the length of time it takes you to pay off the debt and the interest charged, your purchase which was originally on sale could potentially cost you much more in the end. However, I just can’t bear the thought of someone using MY money while I have nothing to show for it. Also, sad to say in these critical times retailers are closing doors for good, left and right. If you have something on layaway, on which you’ve been faithfully making payments and the store closes, you’re out your goods as well as your cash. Of course the choice is yours.

    You’re talking about the photo [reportedly of Rihanna’s injured face taken by police after Brown assaulted her] that was allegedly leaked by cops. You handled that so well; you kept silent in the press.

    Rihanna: It was humiliating; that is not a photo you would show to anybody. I felt completely taken advantage of. I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it’s my life. I was disappointed, especially when I found out the photo was [supposedly leaked by] two women.

    ‘THE Wire,” HBO’s gritty series about life in the Baltimore ghetto, is about to become a course at Harvard.

    The announcement came at a panel discussion at the school featuring several of the show’s stars, according to the Harvard student newspaper, The Crimson.

    The class will be taught by sociology professor William J. Wilson, one of the best-known African American history professors in the country, who has made no secret of the fact that he is a huge fan of the show.

  • The NFL Or Oxford: You Choose!

    Myron Rolle swapped shoulder pads, hard hits and a professional US football contract for lectures, tutorials and quiet anonymity at Oxford University when he traded a spot in the National Football League draft last year for a Rhodes Scholarship.

    Rolle, 22, was a star defensive player at Florida State University, where he also won acclaim as a pre-medical student for research on stem cells and cancer cells.

    In the safety position, Rolle, who is 6ft 2in and weighs 15 stone 5lbs, specialised in taking players to the ground with punishing tackles at full speed, snagging opponents’ passes out of the air and running them back for touchdowns.

    A top prospect for the NFL, Rolle last year opted to defer entering the league’s amateur draft for a year and study for a master’s degree in medical anthropology at Oxford, all with an eye towards an eventual career in medicine.

    I wrote this short story in April 2008 while I was living in Miami, finishing FEMINISTA, and then posted it on FB as an album. (Then I deleted all my photos during my FB is Big Brother paranoia.) But I just came across it in my computer and as it’s totally FEM-related and pretty funny, I thought I’d repost!

    Ever since I had to stop pumping out chapters (this is the ‘before’ shot from 2 weeks ago) to format manuscript pages for my editor, I’ve fallen out of my rhythm. Now, for the last 5 days (and in my self-flagellating mind this feel like 5 months), I’ve been wallowing in an abyss of inertia. My editor hadn’t called to discuss the pages so I’m having paranoid fantasies that she thinks they’re crap. All 402 pages.

    Which doesn’t mean the pages actually are crap. Oh no no no no. To my soft bipolar mind (soft means not in danger of being carried out of my house strapped to a gurney Britney-style..or at least let’s HOPE not), this means she doesn’t GET IT. And now I’m going to have to take up the task of making her GET IT. Because this, I learned when re-reading a book last week called “The Hypomanic Edge: The link between little craziness and a lot of success in America”, is what zealots do in the face of skepticism…

In 1998 Mr. Sharpton was found guilty of defamation and ordered to pay $65,000 for falsely accusing a New York prosecutor of rape in the 1987 Tawana Brawley case. He also played a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot (he called neighborhood Jews “diamond merchants”) and 1995 Freddie’s Fashion Mart riot.

    Only the latest white collar crook to be arrested and charged with insider trading in the stock of companies including HIlton, Clearwire and Google. The founder of Galleon Group, a major hedge fund and worth $1.3 billion is (or if perhaps found guilty WAS) the world’s 559th most richest person (according to Forbes), The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested 52-year-old Rajaratnam and five others on Friday in New York.

    The other money-mongering suspects include:

    +Danielle Chiesi, employee of New Castle Funds formerly the equity hedge fund group of Bear Stearns Asset Management

    +Mark Kurland, New Castle executive

    +Rajiv Goel of Intel Capital

    +Anil Kumar, director at McKinsey & Co., management consulting firm

    +Robert Moffat, executive at IBM

    What else do we know about the ringleader? Although a democrat and financial supporter of both Barack Obama’s campaign for presidency and several of Hilary Clinton’s; among the disturbing facts revealed is that Rajaratnam is said to have funded the Sri Lankan noxious terrorist group Tamil Tigers.

    Illegal insider trading is a capital offense. It is a greedy violation believed to raise the cost of capital for securities issuers, thus decreasing overall economic growth. As if the world’s economy isn’t suffering enough. The financial penalties for such a crime could amount to as much as three times the amount gained or the loss avoided from illegal trading, not to mention the perpetual prison timeinsider trading. In this case the founder of the Galleon Hedge Fund is said to have garnered in excess of $20 million. His bail was set at $100 million to be secured by $20 million in collateral. Do the math. Crime NEVER pays.

    Once again, Rush Limbaugh’s (aka The Penguin) been pushed away from the NFL — the talk-show host has been officially dropped by a group looking to buy the St. Louis Rams. A rep from the group claimed Rush got the boot because his participation complicated the effort. Ever since word got out that the conservative mouthpiece was interested in the team, several people lashed out against it — including the owner of the Indianapolis Colts, the head of the NFL Player’s Association and even Al Sharpton. It might be the best thing that happened to Rush — the Rams haven’t won a single game this season.

  • High School Drop Out? Most Likely Will Do Time!

    A new report chronicling the whereabouts of past high school dropouts shows that all dropouts, and particularly African-Americans, are far more likely to wind up incarcerated or unemployed than those with a high school diploma. 

    Compiled by researchers at Northeastern University, the report shows that high school dropouts are roughly six times more likely to become incarcerated than high school graduates. But the more startling statistic was that between 2006 and 2007 around 23 percent of 16- to 24-year-old African American male high school dropouts were incarcerated or otherwise institutionalized at some point, compared with 6.3 percent of all dropouts.

  • Seven Dead in Georgia Killing Spree

    Seven people were found dead, and two critically injured, following a spree of violence in a mobile home in Brunswick, Georgia on Saturday. Police say they are trying to identify a suspect in the killings, but currently have no leads. Police said that the victims included school-age children, as well as some middle-age adults. The murders mark the largest homicide in the history of southeastern Georgia. According to onloookers, a woman arrived at the scene shortly after the murders took place, and began to scream, “They killed my boy!”
