Savvy entrepreneurs and larger retailers are opening up temporary stores, or “pop-ups” in empty storefronts, simultaneously boosting their brand and bottom line. The stores can last anywhere from a few days to a few months. And with the U.S. retail vacancy rate at 7.6%, for the third quarter of 2009, compared with 6.4% for the third quarter of 2008, according CoStar Group, Inc.– and the holidays just around the corner– now might be the best time to take advantage of the weak commercial real estate market.

Anthony scores 41, Nuggets top Blazers (AP)
Carmelo Anthony almost couldn't miss and Greg Oden missed when it mattered most. Anthony scored 19 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter and the Denver Nuggets were helped by Portland's trouble at the free-throw line for a 97-94 victory Thursday night. Oden missed a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds left, squandering a chance for Portland to go ahead.

Nowitzki, Mavs beat short-handed Cavs (AP)
Dirk Nowitzki scored 19 points before sitting out the final quarter and the Dallas Mavericks beat the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers 93-82 on Saturday night. Cavaliers coach Mike Brown held out starters LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal and Mo Williams on the second night of back-to-back preseason games after losing at San Antonio on Friday.

Wizards hand James-less Cavs first loss (AP)
LeBron James wasn't around. His shoes were present. Mike Miller, wearing a pair of James' signature sneakers, made 5-of-5 3-pointers and scored 24 points, Randy Foye scored 19 in the fourth quarter and the Wizards handed the James-less Cavs their first loss of the preseason, 109-104 on Wednesday night.

Vick scores first TD since 2006 (AP)
Michael Vick has scored his first NFL touchdown since the 2006 season, giving the Philadelphia Eagles a 14-7 lead over the New York Jets early in the second quarter. Playing in his second game with the Eagles, Vick lined up at quarterback, faked a handoff and ran up the middle from 2 yards out 25 seconds into the quarter Thursday night.
