    Dirk Nowitzki scored 19 points before sitting out the final quarter and the Dallas Mavericks beat the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers 93-82 on Saturday night. Cavaliers coach Mike Brown held out starters LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal and Mo Williams on the second night of back-to-back preseason games after losing at San Antonio on Friday.

    Blake Griffin scored 16 points in his second consecutive start and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Utah Jazz 103-96 in a preseason game on Saturday night. Eric Gordon and Chris Kaman also had 16 points apiece for Los Angeles, which has won four straight since a seven-point loss at Golden State in its exhibition opener.

  • Wizards hand James-less Cavs first loss (AP)

    LeBron James wasn't around. His shoes were present. Mike Miller, wearing a pair of James' signature sneakers, made 5-of-5 3-pointers and scored 24 points, Randy Foye scored 19 in the fourth quarter and the Wizards handed the James-less Cavs their first loss of the preseason, 109-104 on Wednesday night.

    The NBA is making Gilbert Arenas — and the Washington Wizards — pay for his silence.     Mickael Pietrus scored 19 points and Dwight Howard and J.J. Redick each had 15 points to lead the Orlando Magic to a 102-83 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in a preseason game on Monday night. Howard also had a team-high 11 rebounds in 24 minutes as the Magic remained unbeaten in four exhibition games.

  • James, O’Neal lead Cavs by Olympiacos (AP)

    Even at 37, Superman can still fly. In his second preseason game at home, Shaquille O'Neal introduced himself to Cleveland's fans with a dive into the stands during the Cavaliers' 111-94 preseason win against Olympiacos. O'Neal and LeBron James each scored 12 points in limited time, but it was O'Neal's launch into the seats that sent fans scrambling for safety.

    Kevin Garnett went down. Luckily for Boston, it was only for a second. Garnett hit the floor after missing on an attempted alley-oop just over five minutes into the preseason opener against Houston on Wednesday night. To the Celtics' relief, he quickly got back up and hit two free throws. Garnett scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in the Rockets' 96-90 victory.

  • Carter scores 21 in Magic debut (AP)

    Vince Carter scored 21 points in his Orlando debut and Brandon Bass added seven of his 13 points in the final two minutes to lift the Magic to a 110-105 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the preseason opener for both teams on Monday night. Carter, who was acquired by the Magic in an offseason trade with the Toronto Raptors, scored 15 points in the third quarter.

  • Favre won’t play in preseason finale (AP)

    Brett Favre's non-traditional arrival in Minnesota is not stopping Vikings coach Brad Childress from taking a traditional approach to the team's preseason finale against Dallas. The 39-year-old quarterback will not play against the Cowboys on Friday night. "I don't see the upside," Childress said on Wednesday.

  • Bengals finally ink top pick Andre Smith (AP)

    Offensive tackle Andre Smith signed a contract Sunday with the Cincinnati Bengals, ending an impasse that dragged on a month into the preseason. The Bengals originally planned to have Smith start at right tackle, but he has missed all three preseason games. He was in Cincinnati and agreed to the deal shortly before the start of a late afternoon practice.

  • Broncos suspend WR Marshall for conduct (AP)

    Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall, openly unhappy with the Denver Broncos, was suspended by the team for the rest of the preseason for what coach Josh McDaniels called "detrimental" conduct. Marshall, who has brooded since demanding a trade and asking for a new contract, was informed of the suspension by McDaniels on Friday.
