  • Tigers salvage split, lead Twins by 2 (AP)

    The Detroit Tigers were down after absorbing a difficult loss in the opener of their critical day-night doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. Their ace took over from there. Justin Verlander kept the Tigers on top in the AL Central, pitching eight innings in a 6-5 victory Tuesday night that restored their two-game lead over the scrappy Twins.

  • Angels clinch third straight West title (AP)

    Kendry Morales homered and drove in three runs, and the Los Angeles Angels wasted no time clinching their third straight AL West title with an 11-0 victory over the second-place Texas Rangers on Monday night. Ervin Santana pitched a seven-hitter for his fourth career shutout, while Maicer Izturis had three hits and two RBIs to wrap up the Angels' sixth playoff berth in eight seasons.

  • "The Cleveland Show" Premieres Tomorrow

    Tomorrow night on Fox, Seth MacFarlane’s “The Cleveland Show” will be premiering its pilot episode. The spinoff of “Family Guy” is based soley on Cleveland, the black character from the previous show. 

    In the beginning of the series, Cleveland Brown and his son move from Quahog to the town of Stoolbend, Virginia. Cleveland has had enough in Quahog. He realizes he wants his own friends, his own sidekicks, and his own stories. He sets out to California, ends up somewhere else, and then winds up in his hometown of Virginia and rekindles an old high school flame with Donna.

    His newly introduced family includes his new wife Donna Tubbs (played by Sanaa Lathan), her teenage daughter Robert Tubbs (played by Regan Gomez), and her five year old son Rallo (played by Mike Henry). Cleveland Jr. (played by Kevin Michael) appears in the show at the age of 14.

    Cleveland’s new neighbors include a family of bears (Seth Macfarlane is the voice of the father), a hipster wanna be, a redneck couple and an English family (Seth Macfarlane is the voice of the father as well).

     

     

     

     

  • Colts’ Brackett, Hayden out vs. Cards (AP)

    Middle linebacker Gary Brackett and cornerback Kelvin Hayden did not travel with the Indianapolis Colts to Arizona where they will play the Cardinals on Sunday night. Brackett injured his left knee late in last Sunday's victory at Miami. Hayden hurt his hamstring. Both were held out of practice this week.

  • LB Diggs out for injury-plagued Panthers (AP)

    The Carolina Panthers will likely have a makeshift lineup against Dallas as they try to avoid an 0-3 start. Linebacker Na'il Diggs was declared out of Monday night's game after missing his third straight practice Saturday with bruised ribs. Starting strong safety Chris Harris, top fullback Brad Hoover and defensive end Everette Brown also sat out the workout and are listed as doubtful.

  • Manning rallies Colts by Dolphins 27-23 (AP)

    Peyton Manning spent most of the night on the sideline and just enough time reaching the end zone. The Indianapolis Colts had the ball for less than 15 minutes, but Manning made the most of his chances, helping his team come from behind four times to beat the Miami Dolphins 27-23 Monday night. Manning threw touchdown passes of 80 yards to Dallas Clark and 48 yards to Pierre Garcon.

The Astros, who failed to make any sort of serious run at the postseason this year, fired manager Cecil Cooper on Monday with 13 games left in the season and promoted Clark from thrid base coach.

    The Houston Astros fired manager Cecil Cooper on Monday with 13 games left in another disappointing season. Third-base coach Dave Clark was named interim manager and things didn't change much Monday night as the Astros lost their eighth straight, 7-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals, to drop to 70-80. General manager Ed Wade said the change couldn't wait until the end of the season.

  • Grizzlies, Iverson close in on deal (AP)

But Wallace Thursday through a team spokesman would only say he did not confirm an offer to ESPN.com.

    The owner of the Memphis Grizzlies and the team's staff are meeting with Allen Iverson as the sides move closer to a deal bringing the veteran guard to a very young team. Iverson said on Twitter on Sunday night he was meeting with the owner and staff Monday and that he wanted to help the Grizzlies develop a winner.

    Clay Buchholz pitched six effective innings, Jason Bay drove in two runs and the Boston Red Sox hurt Tampa Bay's playoff hopes with a 6-3 win over the Rays on Thursday night. The Red Sox took 2 of 3 from the Rays — Boston's first series win at Tropicana Field since Sept. 21-23, 2007 — to extend their AL wild-card advantage over Tampa Bay to six games.

    This was vintage Pedro. Pedro Martinez tossed seven impressive innings to outpitch Tim Lincecum, Ryan Howard doubled in the tiebreaking run and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Thursday night. Martinez (3-0) struck out a season-high nine in his fifth start since signing with the Phillies during the All-Star break, allowing one run and five hits.

  • Vick scores first TD since 2006 (AP)

    Michael Vick has scored his first NFL touchdown since the 2006 season, giving the Philadelphia Eagles a 14-7 lead over the New York Jets early in the second quarter. Playing in his second game with the Eagles, Vick lined up at quarterback, faked a handoff and ran up the middle from 2 yards out 25 seconds into the quarter Thursday night.

    Vikings quarterback Brett Favre says he might have a cracked rib. Favre told ESPN before Monday night's game at Houston that he hasn't received an official diagnosis but that taking a deep breath caused him some discomfort.   • Angels acquire LHP Kazmir from Rays (AP)

The Angels acquired Kazmir, a two-time All-Star, for two minor leaguers and a player to be named. The left-hander was 8-7 with a 5.92 ERA this season for the defending AL champion Rays.

    The Los Angeles Angels did more than just upgrade their unsteady rotation. They added a two-time All-Star who's only 25 years old. Scott Kazmir was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the AL West leaders Friday night, a major move for a high-scoring team that already had World Series aspirations. The Angels landed Kazmir for two minor leaguers and a player to be named.


  • Sen. Ted Kennedy Dies After Cancer Battle

    Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, the last surviving brother in an enduring political dynasty and one of the most influential senators in history, died Tuesday night at his home on Cape Cod after a yearlong struggle with brain cancer. He was 77.
