    Gucci Mane Sentenced To A Year In Prison

    If life could intimate art, the cover to Gucci Mane‘s forthcoming Dec. 8 album ‘The State vs. Radrick Davis’ would prove to be an irony of sorts. According to ‘MTV News,’ the ‘So Icy’ rapper was arrested and sentenced to a year in prison today stemming from a probation violation.

    The startling news comes as shock to many given Gucci’s unyielding presence in today’s hip hop scene. The Atlanta native, who was named one of MTV’s hottest MCs, has been featured on chart-topping singles from likes of Mario, Omarion, Mariah Carey, and is also expected to appear on Timbaland‘s forthcoming album ‘Shock Value 2’ — not to mention the rapper’s most recent collaboration with R&B superstar, Usher for his lead single ‘Spotlight.’

    Despite Gucci (legally known as Radrick Davis) serving six months in prison last year for failing to meet a previous court-ordered 600 hours of community service, he may also serve the same length of time for his current violation.

    Upon his release last March, he spoke with ‘MTV News’ about his 2008 incarceration. “It was a challenge for me,” he said. “I’m just happy my team kept my music going strong for me. And I’m happy I recorded so many records so people could hear me.”

  • Rihanna and Chris Brown: The Financial Value of Rihanna’s Pain

    I hated what Chris Brown did to Rihanna. I was angered, disappointed and irritated by the fact that many are quick to forgive egregious behavior on the part of celebrities, and a hit song can forgive all sins. At the same time, celebs are just like the rest of us, full of complexities that the world may never come to understand. Rihanna has walked away from Chris and she is now telling the entire world how bad of a man he is, and we’re all taking her side.

    The problem for Rihanna, however, is that her actions aren’t making much sense.

    Rihanna’s recent whirlwind media tour has included the likes of ABC News, MTV and other major media outlets. Throughout this tour, she has allowed the world to enter into her dark reflection on the relationship she had with Chris Brown, with that reflection seeming to have almost no productive purpose. I am not sure why the he-say/she-say between two 19-year old kids should be the concern of the nation. But then again, I am sitting here writing about it, so I am as guilty as everyone else.

    The truth is, clearly, that Rihanna could have used this incident as a teachable moment and then moved on with her life. But that wouldn’t be nearly as profitable as doing a media tour attacking Chris.

    The point here is clear and quick:

    A personal tragedy is usually leveraged in order to sell a book or album: Did you notice how tennis star Andre Agassi revealed his drug addiction when his book was released? What about when Mackenzie Phillips announced that her father, well-known performer John Phillips, molested her as a child? Stories like this are a great way to get people to read your book or buy your records. Notice that it took Rihanna several months to start talking about Chris Brown in public. That was probably because she had to finish up her tracks. By the way – her album is scheduled for release in a few days. The Chris Brown story will be the primary driver of her album sales.

    Now, I am a Finance Professor and a capitalist. Well, I am mostly capitalist, to a point. I can understand why Rihanna’s handlers are milking the cow till the udders fall off. The story is interesting and like hungry kids in a candy store, we are salivating to find out more about what happened. But the truth is that we only know most of what occurred, not everything: All we really know is that they got into a fight and Chris won. But we also know that Chris lost the war because he is the one who got arrested. Is there anything else we need to know? Is there anything new that Rihanna is telling us other than vague and “clearly objective”(LOL) things like “his eyes had no soul.” What the heck does that mean anyway?

    While we can respect Rihanna’s decision to use this situation as a chance to build her brand (similar to when Juanita Bynum was allegedly beaten by her husband and then declared herself to be “the face of domestic violence”), the truth is that we probably shouldn’t fall for the hype. We should realize that this was an unfortunate situation,with many lessons to be learned about domestic violence in the black community. Rihanna will sell her records, and Chris will have to rebuild his own brand. But at the end of the day, this media whirlwind created by Rihanna is, for the most part, an opportunity to not only punch back at Chris, but a chance to make a little dough in the process.

    As the rapper TI might say, “It is what it is.”

  • Jay Z vs. Beanie Sigel: It’s Nothing but Business as Usual

    Consider it a strange dream, but I had some thoughts about the Jay-Z beef with the rapper Beanie Sigel. No, I’m not here to talk about keeping street cred. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Half of the artists in the hip hop industry are not nearly as hard or as real as they claim to be. They’re too smart for that. The guys who are really as hard as most rappers claim to be are either in a jail cell or a casket. That’s the truth.

    What got my attention was when Charlamagne Tha God was fired from 100.3, “The Beat” in Philadelphia. I’ve known Charlamagne for years from our work on The Wendy Williams Show, so this made me a little upset. What was even sadder is the allegation that Jay Z may have played a role in getting Charlamagne fired, in large part because Charlamagne conducted an interview with Jay-Z’s new rival, Beanie Sigel. This incident represents more than the standard thuggery that some might see on the surface. Instead, it brings forth a plethora of issues that relate to business, entertainment, money and corporate power. Here are some quick thoughts:

    1) Getting Charlamagne tha God Fired? An allegedly weak move, but a lesson on corporate influence. The smartest artist I’ve ever seen in hip hop is 50 Cent. He writes songs about going to the club, but he doesn’t go to clubs. He gets you to bob your head and pop bottles of Vodka and Petrone, but he doesn’t drink himself. Effectively, he knows the power of getting others addicted, while keeping himself from being vulnerable to the very addictions he is using to control you (remember Ice Cube’s famous line, “Don’t get high on your own supply”?). Jay-Z is similar, as he has rejected the ridiculous, “bling yourself to death and then get shot or go to jail” mindset that many rappers seem to possess. Instead, he preoccupies himself with being a businessman, which means he has ultimate control over his fate.

    So, in spite of the fact that I am irritated at the very weak and unethical move allegedly committed by Jay Z, the teachable moment here is that the corporate monsters are the ones who control hip hop or any other art form for that matter. Most rappers only work to get a place on the plantation, not to actually own one.

    2) The Jay Z beef with Beanie Sigel has been played out thousands of times throughout human history. Ever since the beginning of entertainment, there has always been a natural beef between the sources of capital and the entertainers themselves. Artists are natural risk takers and many of them don’t spend two seconds thinking about the business models that finance their activities. Many artists put their energy into their craft rather than engaging in the boring task of understanding accounting, finance, marketing and distribution. The corporate captains, on the other hand, are not natural risk takers and they are the ones who decide if the show is going to even take place. Given that the corporate chiefs are making the financial choices, and the artists themselves want to push their work out at any cost, there is typically going to be a conflict of interest. The truth, however, is that when these conflicts occur, the artist almost always loses the fight. Those who provide the capital control much of the process.

    3) You’ve got to take good care of the people who work for you. Some have criticized Jigga and Diddy for not taking good care of their artists. I am not sure if this is true or not, but I do know that if you are tempted by corporate greed, you can find yourself enslaving people rather than empowering them. The greatest temptation in hip hop is to take advantage of another person’s obsessive commitment to fulfilling their personal dream. Thousands of artists get signed to Draconian contracts that are skewed heavily in favor of the manager rather than the artist. The problem, however, is that when you design business models to exploit other people, you may find that it comes back to hurt you later on down the road.

    4) There is a financial value of manufactured beef. This might surprise you, but a lot of so-called “beefs” in hip hop are actually branding mechanisms designed to get media attention to sell records. Ever notice how there are a lot of artists who want to stab and shoot each other one minute and then end up making records together the next? Much of this is due to the fact that the lifeblood of any artist is media access. No media means you don’t eat. Given that artists are effectively hired slaves for the record labels who can be used up and dropped at any moment, they are willing to engage in any desperate ploy imaginable to get the cameras pointed in their direction.

    Want to sell some albums? Go out and get arrested. Want to build your brand for “keeping it real”? Get caught in the club with a gun on your hip. Want to keep your job at the record label? Start a beef with a popular artist and get him to respond to you. As hyper-masculine as most hip hop artists pretend to be, the reality is that they are scared little boys on the inside; absolutely petrified that their label is going to find another talented brother from the projects and give him the spotlight they’ve bet their life on. This is not always such a great place to be, which is why any athlete or entertainer needs to get educated.

    Hip hop is an enlightened and exciting industry. At the same time, it’s the same corporate machine controlling people of color and distracting us from true power by keeping us engaged solely in the act of entertainment. As much as I might criticize Jay Z for allegedly going after my friend Charlamagne tha God, the truth is that Jigga seems to be the only one who gets it. Hip hop is not about entertainment, it’s strictly business.

  • Is Health Care Reform Going to Cost you More or Less Money?

    All of us are confused about health care reform. Many of us support the idea because we support the president. Some of us support health care reform because we know that the current system is terribly flawed. Well, getting informed on the issues might be a great way to ensure that you know what you are backing.

    One of the great problems with health care reform is that most Americans can’t trust it in the first place, given that there are so many special interest groups who’ve hooked their fangs into a corrupt and dysfunctional system. Pharmaceutical companies charge incredibly high prices for drugs and work with lawmakers to keep consumers from having other alternatives. Every day, there is a senior citizen moving one inch closer to death because he/she can’t afford their medication. Most of us know that this system has to be altered.

    Dr. Elaina George is a prominent Otolaryngologist at the Peach Tree ENT Center in Atlanta Georgia. In the audio below, Dr. George breaks down the health care reform package that is being debated in Congress this week. So, while the news might be muted by the mass shootings that have recently occurred, we should not allow this distraction to keep us from the issues that are going to affect our lives.

  • DB Law, Broncos agree to terms (AP)

    Defensive back Ty Law has agreed to terms on a deal with the Denver Broncos. Kevin Poston, Law's agent, confirmed the news Friday in an e-mail to The Associated Press. The agreement came after Denver's media availability and a Broncos spokesman said the team had no comment. Law is expected to sign the deal Saturday, pending the passing of his physical.

  • Fighter Pat Barry Wins Big Purse Right Before Being Homeless

    UFC fighter Pat Barry was thanking his lucky stars for his big win against Antoni Hardonk. The fighter won a $120,000 purse for his accomplishment, which was right on time given that he was literally six days away from being evicted from his apartment. Barry’s win was emotional for obvious reasons and nearly everyone in his camp was in shock to hear about his financial situation. What is saddest is that his challenges are not uncommon among fighters in general.

    Although Pat Barry hasn’t had the chance to earn millions, many major fighters end up going broke even after their gravy trains have stopped flowing. The outcomes don’t make any sense, given that a bit of financial discipline could have made all the difference in the world. When you earn as much as $10 – $20 million dollars in a payday, you can live a pretty wild financial life and still have money to save. Instead, some athletes seem to want to push the limits and it’s actually uncommon to hear of any boxer who DOESN’T end up in the poor house.

    Here are a list of financial demons that plague fighters when they finally hit the big time:

    1) The bling: For some reason, athletes and entertainers are expected to live an incredibly extravagant lifestyle. Mike Tyson employed over 200 people and spent millions on items too ridiculous to mention. What’s worse is that Mike Tyson actually owed as much as $38 million dollars at one point. Evander Holyfield’s $10 million dollar, 54,000 square foot mansion was put on the auction block last year after foreclosure. Many athletes go into debt because they are banking on their next payday to get them out of the new financial holes they keep digging for themselves.

    2) Bad relationships: Divorce is a great way to go broke. Before Muhammad Ali married his third wife, Lonnie, his previous wife divorced him and took his last $2 million dollars right before Muhammad’s career ended with Parkinson’s disease. It was at that point when he found himself broke and unable to earn additional income. Fortunately, a good woman came into his life and used her MBA from UCLA to liquidate the massive financial value from his brand name. So, as much as black male athletes can be ruined by women, they can also be saved by them. However, a long string of baby’s mamas, bad marriages, draining relatives and expensive arm candy can cost an athlete dearly.

    3) The IRS: The IRS is sneaky and has led to the financial demise of many celebs. Even honest, hard working Americans can fall prey to the demon of back taxes. Joe Louis was one great example of a man who made a great deal of money, but found out years later that he owed tax money to the IRS. For the rest of his career, he would wander from one fight to another, with IRS agents waiting in the back room to take the entire purse after the fight. While his career was a great one, he was not a happy man in old age.

    4) A lack of education: A lack of money management ability and inadequate financial literacy plagues many wealthy entertainers and athletes. Growing up in poverty doesn’t exactly endow you with an extensive understanding of trust funds, estate planning, stocks and bonds. One of the great tragedies for NFL and NBA athletes is that many of them attend universities that simply hand the athlete a degree without forcing the athlete to get an education. But there is an old saying that “a fool and his money will soon part ways.” Even if you are incredibly wealthy, you have simply made yourself into a sucker for those who are smart enough to take that money from you.

    5) The leaches: The easiest way to get a pack of new friends is to have a lot of money. In addition to the friends who suddenly find you to be a fascinating human being, you’ve got managers, lawyers, agents, homeboys and baby’s mamas who want their cut. It is not uncommon for a celebrity to have to give away as much as $700,000 out of every million dollars he/she earns. Everybody wants a piece of your pie until you are down and out; at that point, you become yesterday’s news.

    I don’t think that any athlete should live like a miser, that’s no fun. Instead, why not simply save 20% of your income and party with the rest? That would give you a nest egg for retirement and allow you to pay the bills after you’ve fought your last fight. What’s saddest is that every boxer says they are going to retire young and none of them ever do. It’s time to stop living the same story over and over again.

  • Costco Accepts Food Stamps: Trend at Wholesale Clubs, Grocery Stores

    Leading wholesale retailer Costco has announced that it will now accept food stamps in its stores nationwide. This news comes as a shock to many, who see Costco as catering to elite shoppers. Yet, this should not be surprising as more Americans than ever are using government assistance to feed their families — 10 million people have gone on food stamps in the last two years alone. This is leaving shopping clubs like Costco and Sam’s scrambling to attract an entirely new realm of consumer, who may not be technically “poor.”

    The New York Times explains:

    Up until recently, some wholesale clubs were skeptical poor people would be willing to pay the $50-a-year membership fee or would be interested in buying food in the bulk quantities for which the stores are famous.

    But now, in this economy, stores are battling for every dollar and see a big potential market in the growing ranks of food-stamp recipients. From warehouse clubs to supermarkets and mom-and-pop groceries, stores are retraining their cashiers and hanging new signs to welcome such customers.

    ”Certainly this economy was a wake-up call,” Costco chief financial officer Richard Galanti recently told investors. ”It is not just very low-end economic strata that are using these.”

    … The U.S. Department of Agriculture said nearly 200,000 retailers nationwide now accept food stamps, 20 percent more than in 2005.

    Executives at Costco are finding that poorer families are actually eager to pay the $50 dollar membership fee to take advantage of the fact that the company now accepts food stamps. And the retailer believes that poorer families will actually save more money in the end by buying in bulk, even if the initial investment seems high.

In fact, now is a better time than ever to seek out government assistance in buying food if you need it. The social stigma attached to food stamps is essentially gone as so many people are in need, and now more companies than ever are rising to meet the needs of this customer.     Grammy Award winning R&B supergroup Boyz II Men (l-r Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman and Nathan Morris) were on hand for the big official debut of Princess Tiana (of the forthcoming animated movie ‘The Princess and the Frog’) at the Magic Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on Oct. 26, 2009. The former Motown Records hit-makers visited the world’s most famous amusement destination as part of Disneyworld’s annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, where they performed a string of hits during the “Eat to the Beat” event. Earlier in the day, the ‘End of the Road’ singers helped welcome Princess Tiana during her theme park debut, which included an official procession, a New Orleans-inspired second line parade, and a 15 minute musical presentation.

    Legendary saxophonist Clarence Clemons‘ first memoir, ‘Big Man: Real Life & Tall Tales,’ is in stores this week. Published by Grand Central Publishing, the hardcover tome (written with best friend and television producer Don Reo) is the very first book penned by a member of Bruce Springsteen‘s iconic E Street Band. “The Boss,” himself, even wrote the foreword for the book, which “isn’t the same old story” and “one that tells true, unknown stories … in a series of hybrid fact-and-fiction stories called “legends.” Clemons, 67, is a Norfolk, Virginia native who’s been a prominent member of the hit-making outfit since 1972. “The book was being written all my life,” he told Metro newspaper. “We just decided to put it down on paper. … It’s pretty great because it’s something I’ve never done before.’

And what better time to embark on his new campaign than during this week’s National Teen Driver Safety Week.     Two weeks following his death, preliminary autopsy results conclude that ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Ashley “A.J.” Jewell died from a pre-existing bout with sickle-cell anemia. Fulton County Associate Medical Examiners suggest the blood disorder disease may have restricted Jewell’s oxygen supply and infuriated his fatal injuries. “The altercation played a role in that, and his underlying disease process contributed to his overall demise,” medical examiner Dr. Kelly Rose told E! News. “In certain states of stress, the red cells actually become deformed. They deliver oxygen to all parts of your body, but when they have this sickle shape, there’s a backup or plug-in that happens. It’s especially bad in your lungs.” The fiancé of former Xscape member, Kandi Burruss, died from a severe blow during an Oct. 2 altercation at Atlanta strip club Body Tap.     The Week That Was: Shyne not really free at last, Kim Zolciak Really Engaged to Big Poppa?The rapper Shyne, who was convicted of a club shooting in 1999, was reportedly released from a New York correctional facility Oct. 6 and then transferred into custody by immigration officials. Though the former Bad Boy Records star has a green card, news reports hint that he may be deported to his native Belize because of the felony conviction. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Mike Gilhooly would only tell media outlets that Shyne was in custody for being in violation of U.S. immigration law.

    Born Jamal Barrow, Shyne was on the verge of superstardom when he was arrested in 1999 for a shooting at the Club New York nightclub. His mentor and record label chief Diddy, and then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, was also charged but acquitted at trial.

    While in prison, Shyne (now 30) changed his name to Moses Leviy in recognition of his Jewish mother. His father, Dean Oliver Barrow, is currently the prime minister of Belize.

    Attorney Oscar Michelen, told the ‘New York Daily News’ his client “is anxious to get released and is looking forward to seeing his family and being able to be free to do what he wants to do.”

    ShyneDespite what seems to be a smear campaign from a few mainstream gossip columns, Mo’Nique and her new late night talk show is a hit. Numbers do not lie. The comedienne -who is making headlines for not promoting the new Tyler Perry/Oprah Winfrey-produced film ‘Precious’ – has made history for BET with ‘The Mo’Nique Show,’ which netted 1.5 million viewers for its debut Oct. 5.

    The premiere episode featured appearances from Steve Harvey, R&B artist Monica, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin as well as a performance by R&B recording artist Jeremih. A rep for BET said the show ranked as the network’s highest-rated show for the season and was the number two entertainment program on cable during its time slot. “The inaugural episode also outperformed the competition, coming in as the number one entertainment talk show on cable overall and the number one talk show among adults 18-49 (850,000),” said BET spokeswoman Tricia Newell.     Jennifer Hudson is getting back to work. As the Academy Award and Grammy Award winner celebrates the recent birth of her baby, she’s also getting into the holiday spirit. The TV special ‘Jennifer Hudson: I’ll be Home for Christmas’ has been announced to air on ABC in December. According to reports, the show will feature the singer-actress reliving her childhood holidays with musical performances filmed at various locations around her hometown of Chicago. The chosen venues will be specific to her youth; they include her church and the music academy she attended. Hudson’s record label has no plans to release a holiday album to coincide with the TV special.

    Anna Deavere Smith is something like a phenomenon. Her new show ‘Let Me Down Easy’ opened Oct. 7 at New York City’s tightly packed Second Stage Theater and a flurry of notable well wishers – including Gayle King, opera diva Jessye Norman, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage, actresses Dawn Lewis and Judith Light – came out to celebrate.

    For the Tony Award nominee’s latest one-woman, multi-character show, Smith explores the power of the body, the price of health, and the resilience of the spirit. The Anthony Foglia-directed tour-de-force where the McArthur Genius Grant winning wunderkind transforms herself into a dramatic range of characters, all of whom she’s interviewed and impersonates masterfully for the 95-minute play. But this is far from satire; ‘Let Me Down Easy’ is a thought provoking marvel about mortality channeled through journalistic accounts from a wide variety of sources, including fashion icon Lauren Hutton, super-athlete Lance Armstrong, playwright Eve Ensler, former boxing champ Michael Bent, late movie critic Joel Siegel and former Texas Governor Ann Richards.

    Controversial reggae artist Buju Banton’s concert at the Voodoo Lounge in San Jose, California on Oct. 13 has been canceled. “After reviewing Buju Banton’s lyrics, I was appalled by their sheer hatred and encouragement of violence towards the gay, lesbian and transgender community,” stated David Powell, co-owner of Voodoo Lounge. “There is no place for these types of incendiary remarks at Voodoo Lounge or in San Jose.” Banton – who recorded the song ‘Boom, Bye Bye,’ in 1988, which incited the torture and murder of gay men – has been the subject of protest for his concert bookings.

    A website has been erected to boycott any promoter doing business with him. An open letter to his manager Tracii Mcgregor, a former editor at the Source magazine, has been published there also, calling her to task for saying that Banton was “only 15 years old when he recorded that song.” Powell maintained that the club’s ownership team “did not know the content of Banton’s lyrics. If we had known, we would not have scheduled this performance.”

    Big Poppa Kim Zolciak Real Housewives of AtlantaSo is ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Kim Zolciak really engaged to Big Poppa? Only God knows for sure. On last week’s episode of the televised guilty pleasure, the bleached-blond urban socialite showed off the new rocks that she got, and boasted of her engagement to her mysterious millionaire paramour (who has been identified as Lee Najjar). Hmmmm. Her TV show co-star Sheree Whitfield, who recently underwent a downsizing divorce from former football player Bob Whitfiled, wondered aloud (and on camera) about the validity of the engagement since the man is still married.

    A Bravo network spokeswoman couldn’t be reached for comment about the possible nuptials. But until that stone is uncovered, folks can see really how large the ‘Tardy for the Party’ singer is living — the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper got an exclusive look at her luxurious digs.

  • Method Man: Arrested for Tax Evasion

    Method Man Tax Arrest

    Grammy Award-winning rapper and Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man turned himself in yesterday to the Staten Island District Attorney on felony charges related to a $32,799 tax bill from 2004 to 2007.

    The 38-year-old rapper-actor (born Clifford Smith) was also in hot water with the government in 2008. He owed the IRS $52,503 in payments, and, as a result, his Lincoln Navigator SUV was repossessed.

    Judging from all of his debt, one would think that the ‘Soul Plane’ actor is suffering from a case of memory loss. And that just may be the case in this scenario.

    “Myself, I’m a pothead,” he told the New York Daily News in March. “Sure [the tax department] sent letters to my house, saying, ‘We need this money.’ They started sending them in 2002. Here it is 2009, and I never paid this s–t because I don’t think like that!”

    Although Smith may have a slight disability, district attorney Daniel Donovan claims the rapper can still face prison time.

    “Taxes are the burden that all citizens share in a civil society, whether you are an ‘average Joe’ on the street or a high-profile rap artist,” he said in a statement. “Because of the alleged action of people like Mr. Smith, law-abiding citizens face higher taxes and reduced government services. Failure to properly report and pay your taxes is a crime against all citizens and will be aggressively investigated and prosecuted.”

    Following his arrest on Oct. 5, Method Man was arraigned and released. He is due back in court Dec. 9. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.

    In what appeared to be not much of a surprise to some, actress-singer Christina Milian and music producer The Dream have officially confirmed that they’re expecting a child within the coming months.

    The happily married newlyweds; who tied the knot last month in Las Vegas, broke the news over the weekend to People magazine and are “really excited.”The Last Dragon

    “My husband and I are expecting,” the ‘Dip IT Low’ singer said. “We’re about four and a half months along, about 19 weeks.”

    Despite the public taking notice to an obvious change in Milian’s physical appearance along with the couple’s spontaneous wedding, the songstress/actress revealed that everything was planned.

    “Honestly, it was kind of planned,” she said. “We were engaged for many months.”

    In between baby shopping, Milian is also busy wrapping up her forthcoming album ‘Elope’ which is tentatively set for an early 2010 release.

  • Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian Get Married: 5 Questions I’d Like to Ask

    Today, we are going to use an interesting story in black celebrity news to teach a short lesson called “How NOT to make major life decisions.” Let’s start the conversation, shall we?

    NBA Star Lamar Odom has decided to marry Khloe Kardashian, whose sister Kim usually takes up all the family spotlight. The story goes that Khloe was hosting a “Welcome to LA Party” for new Laker, Ron Artest. Khloe allegedly ran the bill up to $3,000 and Lamar agreed to pay it. Could four weeks of love be built on a more stable foundation than money? The wedding ceremony was, in many ways, a fairytale: Celebrities everywhere, a triple arch of white roses, a serenade by the singer Babyface taking place at a private home in Beverly Hills. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire would be proud.

    But after the last piece of cake has been eaten and the wild honeymoon lovemaking is over, Lamar and Khloe then have to confront the reality of their choice. Based on what I’ve read, I’d be willing to bet a pair of Air Jordans that their marriage doesn’t last 3 years. I’d hate to rain on anyone’s romantic parade, but we’ve got to be honest when it comes to choices like this.

    Here are some questions I’d love to ask Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian:1) You’ve been dating for just a month? Are you serious? Love is a tricky thing. Most of us have been fooled by the first few weeks of a new relationship, thinking that Mr/Mrs. Right Now was Mr./Mrs. Now and Forever. There is scientific evidence that the chemical reactions in your brain during the lovemaking process are similar to mild injections of cocaine, which explains irrational behavior during the beginning and end of relationships. I don’t doubt that Lamar and Khloe are in love, but most of us know that the first month of a relationship makes it difficult to distinguish between being “in love” and being “in lust.” Why sign a legal contract until you’re completely sure?

    2) What’s up with the prenup? You DO have a prenup don’t you? I can define the word “prenup” with the following sentence: Four years, $32 million dollars. Yes, that’s the size of Lamar’s latest contract with the Lakers, and the reason I hope this 29-year old has protected his assets. Sure, Khloe’s family isn’t struggling either, but I presume that Lamar has taken the time to protect his wealth. If he hasn’t, then he deserves whatever happens as a consequence.

    3) Baby rumors anyone? After hearing that Khloe might be pregnant, some of this started to make sense. I presume that the baby belongs to Lamar, since Khloe doesn’t exactly look like she’s been carrying anybody’s baby for longer than a month. Lamar also has some baby mama drama of his own, with the children he created in a prior marriage. If you ever want a recipe for massive financial strain, try getting married too quickly and having a bunch of children in the process. It takes a few minutes to make a baby, but the child support can last a lifetime. We might be tempted to think that Lamar’s massive wealth makes child support a breeze, but the problem is that the more you earn, the more they make you pay. There’s nothing more difficult than being an ex-NBA player still paying NBA-level child support.

    4) What about your other kids Mr. Odom? When asked about the wedding, Liza Morales, Lamar’s ex-wife, sounded as if she were trying to survive a terrorist attack or a death in the family. According to TMZ, Odom’s ex-wife had this to say:

    “Yes, the circumstances over the last few weeks have been upsetting but none of my actions publicly or from the privacy of my home could be classified as a meltdown. I have maintained a brave face for my children who are my main concern and I remain strong for them.” She went on to say she has “the support of my family and friends and Lamar’s family have been nothing but supportive of me and the kids during this difficult time. I wish Lamar nothing but happiness we all deserve to be happy.”

    What’s also interesting is that Lamar’s other kids didn’t come to the wedding. I wonder if Khloe can smell the ensuing drama?

    OK, now that we’ve used Lamar and Khloe’s situation as our case study on how NOT to make major life choices, let’s find our true teachable moments (you know I don’t just do celebrity stuff unless there is a lesson in there somewhere):

    The bottom line is this: Marriage is a serious decision, not something that should leave you focused on the elegance of the ceremony or the romance of being able to pick out bridal gowns. Some of us get so excited about the idea of having marital legitimacy that we forget the fundamental truth that LOVING together means LIVING together. If you haven’t known someone long enough to be sure you can live with them, then you probably don’t know if you can ever truly love them.

    Secondly, we must be aware of the drug of lust, in which the chemical highs of sex can lead us to make damaging life choices. Many a celebrity has been left financially devastated by poor relationship choices in their 20s and 30s. Finally, if people have lives as complicated as Khloe and Lamar, at least a year of study is necessary to figure out if they can cope with all the complex externalities of each other’s personal lives: baby mama drama, professional issues, addictions, financial habits, etc. If you marry someone after a month and find out later that they have serious problems you can’t deal with, you only have yourself to blame.

    This is not just a lesson for Khloe and Lamar, but a lesson for all of us. If you claim that you never made mistakes when you were young and in love, then you are probably just a big ol liar.

  • Dr. Boyce Talks Money and Sex on ABC News

    I recently appeared on ABC News to talk about Financial Lovemaking, and the link between sex and money. I’ve discussed relationships and money several times on AOL in the past, but I think that I should quickly lay out some very interesting similarities that may not have crossed your mind. As I teach my Personal Finance Class at Syracuse University this semester, I am reminded that managing our money is linked to managing our love, which is critical to the ultimate goal of effectively managing our lives.

    1) Many people think about both sex and money every single day. Don’t lie, you know you enjoy thinking about sex, even if you aren’t getting any. But chances are, you also think about money, whether it’s figuring out how to get what you need or how to keep what you’ve got. Even most rappers spend all their time talking about either sex, money or how they use their money to get more sex. It’s actually a universal concept.

    2) Both sex and money can make you feel good. If I wrote you a check for a million dollars, you’d probably end up having a good day. If I offered you the sexiest person you could think of to do as you wish, you might have an even better day. Both sex and money have the effect of giving us a natural high that leads to human beings spending their lives obsessed with obtaining both commodities.

    3) Both sex and money can devastate you if you are irresponsible. Promiscuous sex can lead to a life of disease and drama. Promiscuous spending can lead to a life of financial turmoil. Both sex and money, being the powerful drugs that they are, should be managed with both responsibility and moderation. They are both meant to be enjoyed, but not meant to be abused.

    4) It’s scary to share either one of them with another party. Your body is valuable, so you don’t want to share it with the wrong person. Your money is valuable too, so the same logic applies. Sharing your financial or sex life with the wrong person can lead to years of regret. Emotional, physical and financial investments are all quite risky.

    5) Both sex and money require trust if you are engaged with another person. I’ve heard women talk about financial betrayal by their partners in the same context as emotional betrayal. If you trust someone with your money, you are trusting them with your life. The same is true when it comes to trusting them with your body.

    6) It’s no fun to share either your sex or your money with someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. Sex is better with someone who knows how to do it right. Well, sharing your financial future with someone who knows what they’re doing can actually lead to dramatic improvements in your quality of life. So, when you consider how good a person looks or how great they make you feel, also consider how great they can make you feel in the long run by providing both financial and emotional security, which can effectively be the same thing.

    7) One is often used to obtain the other. On average, guys with more money get more sexual opportunities and those who give good sex could use it to get their bills paid if they wanted to (Come on, let’s be honest here – what’s the oldest profession in the world again?). There are biological reasons that men with greater access to resources tend to make better mating options for women. The rapper Ludacris noticed how he suddenly went from “ah-ight” to “handsome” when he started to make money. That’s to be expected.
