    The Chicago Bears and quarterback Jay Cutler have agreed on a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2013 season. A person familiar with the negotiations said the deal includes approximately $20 million guaranteed and roughly $30 million in new money. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the terms were not released.

    The NBA has told teams it's going ahead with replacement referees, days after the league thought a deal had been reached with locked-out officials. The league sent a memo Tuesday informing teams it had "no expectation of concluding a timely labor contract." The memo, obtained by The Associated Press, follows the latest failure in negotiations.

  • Lead negotiator for NBA refs pulls out (AP)

    The lead negotiator for the locked-out NBA referees removed himself from the talks Monday in hopes of resolving a dispute that threatens to have replacements on the floor this week. Lamell McMorris released a statement saying the negotiations with the NBA would be handled by general counsel Brian Lam and the executive board of the National Basketball Referees Association.

  • Lawyer: ‘Pacman’ Jones close to CFL deal (AP)

    Adam "Pacman" Jones is close to returning to pro football — north of the border. Jones' attorney, Worrick Robinson, said Tuesday he has been in "consistent negotiations" with a CFL team. Robinson told The Associated Press a deal could be completed by the end of the week. "He's still young and has a lot of playing days ahead of him," Robinson said.

  • Giants working on deal to sign RHP Penny (AP)

    The San Francisco Giants are working on a deal to add right-hander Brad Penny to their rotation for the stretch run. A person with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press on Monday that details still needed to be finalized. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations with Penny were ongoing.
