  • Gucci Mane: Sentenced To A Year In Prison

Gucci Mane Sentenced To A Year In Prison

If life could intimate art, the cover to Gucci Mane‘s forthcoming Dec. 8 album ‘The State vs. Radrick Davis’ would prove to be an irony of sorts. According to ‘MTV News,’ the ‘So Icy’ rapper was arrested and sentenced to a year in prison today stemming from a probation violation.

The startling news comes as shock to many given Gucci’s unyielding presence in today’s hip hop scene. The Atlanta native, who was named one of MTV’s hottest MCs, has been featured on chart-topping singles from likes of Mario, Omarion, Mariah Carey, and is also expected to appear on Timbaland‘s forthcoming album ‘Shock Value 2’ — not to mention the rapper’s most recent collaboration with R&B superstar, Usher for his lead single ‘Spotlight.’

Despite Gucci (legally known as Radrick Davis) serving six months in prison last year for failing to meet a previous court-ordered 600 hours of community service, he may also serve the same length of time for his current violation.

Upon his release last March, he spoke with ‘MTV News’ about his 2008 incarceration. “It was a challenge for me,” he said. “I’m just happy my team kept my music going strong for me. And I’m happy I recorded so many records so people could hear me.”

  • Lee Naijar: ‘Real Housewives’ Mysterious "Big Poppa" Reportedly Selling Atlanta Mansion

Real HousewivesThe palatial Atlanta mansion of Lee Najjar, the alleged boyfriend of ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Kim Zolciak, is on the market for $25 million.

BV Newswire previously reported that Zolciak and her on-again-off-again wealthy boyfriend (pictured left with music/film producer Dallas Austin) had split. The hit Bravo reality series has recently centered on the couple’s relationship despite Najjar being legally married.

His children, Katelin and Jamen, were featured on the MTV series ‘Teen Cribs’ earlier this year, where they let MTV cameras in on their luxurious digs. Earlier this year, portions of the film ‘Zombieland‘ were reportedly shot on-location at Najjar’s home.

According to Buckhead.net, the home, which was built as a summer cottage in 1914, sold in 2004 for $2.74 million.

Rodney Ho, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper’s Radio and TV Talk blog, reports that the home is being marketed through Christie’s and other high-end magazines to attract a foreign buyer. The nine-bedroom estate, which boasts a movie theater, music studio, beauty salon, game room, basketball court and countless other amenities, would be the first home to sell in the Atlanta secondary market for more than $10 million.

As for his relationship with Zolciak, although the mother of two told Usmagazine.com that they had split on Oct. 14. She went on to tell other media: “We are on and off…very tricky right now.”

The ‘Tardy for the Party’ singer has also been recently spotted wearing the engagement ring that the real estate mogul gave her — on her right hand.

There is no word on whether Najjar and his wife – whose name is coincidentally Kimberly – are still married.

It’s no secret how Young Money’s leading general Lil Wayne got his spot as one of the most popular entertainers out today. He continuously expanded his music catalogue by releasing mixtape after mixtape, and collaboration after collaboration with various artists. While in jail, a series of mix-tapes featuring Gucci’s music were released, increasing the So Icy MC’s street popularity. Once released from prison, Gucci Mane set off on a campaign to keep the streets hot and conquer the mainstream scene. Collaborating with Mariah Carey on the “Obsessed” remix and appearing on Mario’s hit “Break Up,” Gucci was becoming a crossover artist and being introduced to America. Not forgetting where he came from, he continued to cater to the streets, as his post-prison released mix-tapes, Writing On The Wall, The Movie Part 2, and The Burrprint 3D, have had both the ‘net and streets in a frenzy. Gucci Mane shows no sign of slowing down, as he continues to release new tracks, and was just recently named the #6 Hottest MC of 2009 by MTV. Below are a few of his recent collaborations.

Cam’ron & Vado feat. Gucci Mane: Cuffin’

Sean Garrett feat. Gucci Mane: Up In My Heart

Teairra Mari, Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane: Sponsor

Jagged Edge feat. Trina & Gucci Mane: Tip Of My Tongue

Triple C’s feat. Gucci Mane: Trick’n Off

Big Boi feat. Gucci Mane: Shine Blockers

Mariah Carey feat. OJ Da Juiceman, Gucci Mane: H.A.T.E. U (Remix)

Do you think Gucci Mane is the next Lil Wayne (in terms of popularity), or will his buzz start to go away?

  • Elizabeth Mwanga: TV Producer Talks Cougars, Men, Weight Loss

    Meet Elizabeth Mwanga. She’s sexy, she’s smart and she’s a self-proclaimed cougar-in-training.

Mwanga, a native New Yorker born to Ugandan parents, is the creator and executive producer of ‘Cougars: NYC,’ a series documenting the lives of older women in New York City. Her New York-based boutique television production company, IiN TV Productions, focuses on original reality docu-series, docu-soaps and makeover shows, as well as commercial and music video productions.

In addition to her work in television and film, Mwanga owns and operates Imana Music/Black Family Publishing, a music catalog that holds more than 500 free songs.

She’s a real go-getter. But life hasn’t been that peachy for her.

Nearly slipping into a diabetic coma in 2007, then weighing more than 200 pounds at 5-foot-1, Mwanga decided to “live and begin a path to recovery.” Fast-forward to this year, Mwanga has lost over 100 pounds and regulated her diabetes through weight loss, diet and exercise. For this cougar-in-training, transforming herself from the inside out has not only put a new spin on her dating life, but also given her a unique perspective.

Stating that 33 is the new 23, Mwanga wants you to forget what you heard about cougars and let her tell her side of the story.

You consider yourself a “cougar-in-training.” You also draw a distinction between pumas and cougars. Can you fill me in on all this terminology?

When I think of a cougar, I think of an independent, hot older woman, a woman who looks really hot for her age. She’s a woman that younger men, who we call cubs, tend to like, and she likes younger men because she has as much energy if not more than them. A cougar-in-training, or c.i.t., is a woman in her thirties who likes younger guys. They’re considered pumas. Cougars are women over 40. A lot of people are saying that pumas and cougars have this rivalry between them, because pumas are a little bit younger and they can get more guys. I call pumas cougars-in-training because I think that’s a better term for them. I’m not trying to take away from cougars at all, because I think they’re the bomb. What kind of gets on my nerves is when people talk about cougars in the media. They’re always like, “She’s such a cougar, always on the hunt, preying on younger men.” When a lot of people talk about cougars in the media, what they’re really talking about are hot and horny older women that prey on younger men. That is one type of cougar.

Regarding people’s misconceptions about cougars, don’t you think that has to do with the literal definition of a cougar? They’re predators that hunt other animals for food.

The majority of women that I either hang out with or know are cougars. Some maybe want men just for sex, but some of them want relationships. The thing about cougars that people don’t really understand is that there are a lot of different types of cougars, like any other woman. There are women that just want to get it poppin’ and there are women that want relationships. There are so many different types of cougars. You can’t really label them as one thing.

So, how do you deal with the term cougar and its connotations?

We’re not sugar mamas here. We’re not trying to pay anyone’s way. We’re just dating and seeing where it goes. The point I want to make is that these are not women that are out there every night wearing low-cut tops and tight skirts, trying to snag a young guy and do him. Courteney Cox’s show, I haven’t seen it, but I heard that it really kind of reaffirms the negative stereotypes about cougars — the botox and all that. The word “cougar” makes a lot of cougars, especially black cougars, self-conscious about the label for one reason or another. A lot of cougars are scared off by the term, and they want to keep things private.

What is it about cougars that young men are attracted to?

Look, if a woman is 50 years old and she looks 50 and she’s not put together, she’s not going to get a hot guy. There is a reason why Demi Moore got Ashton Kutcher. Cougars are at a point in their lives where they’re extremely self-confident and stable in their lives. I throw cougar parties in the city, and I invite cougars-in-training between 30 and 40 years old. The majority of the guys that come to my parties are young professional guys. They like the professional older woman look. A lot of the guys tell me they love a cougar’s confidence. I hope I don’t offend you, but they tell me a lot of the women in their twenties who they’ve dealt with don’t know what they want and are insecure, which may or may not be true.

Do you catch any flack from younger women?

Yeah, sometimes, but I get more flack from older men. From younger women, I don’t get as much flack as I get, “Go on girl. Do your thing.” Because, I think it’s empowering for all women. At the end of the day, we’re all going to get older, and, unfortunately, the way that this society looks at older women is not good. But women are changing the game now. If you look at 20 years ago, women on TV, when they were in their forties they were matronly. There weren’t many actresses over 40 that were hot sexpots. Now, we’ve got Halle Berry. Look at Heidi Klum. Women are staying hot a lot longer than they used to. While we shouldn’t place all of our values on looks, I do believe in taking care of yourself from the inside out. Even Michelle Obama talks about that. She says that she gets up every day at 5 a.m. to work out, because she’s like, “I know when I look good, I feel good.” That’s real. And that should be for men, too.

You brought up two points that I want you to elaborate on: How society views older women and also the flack you receive from older men. Do you think cougars are turning gender stereotypes on their heads?

I did a radio show on cougars and guess who was calling in all upset? Older men. They were so mean. One of the cougars on the show said she was attracted to younger guys because she thought they took better care of themselves, had more energy and were more attractive than older men. The older men were calling in like “I’m 50 years old, and I have the stamina of a 25-year-old.” They were offended. A lot of older men feel that they are being rejected, which is not the case. I mean, how do you think that women feel? It happens all the time with men. They trade up. They’re with a woman for 20 years. They’re married to her and have a great life with her. Then they get divorced, and the next wife is 10 years younger, 20 years younger. The woman gets blamed. It’s “she let herself go.” Meanwhile, the guy is 50 and bald. I mean, listen, who let who go? It happens all the time. No one says anything about it. It’s time for us to do a switcheroo. My goal is to empower mature women. I prefer the term mature over older. But it’s like a sisterhood.

You mentioned earlier that cougars are attracted to younger guys for their energy. But if you’re in a long-term relationship with a younger guy, he’s obviously going to get older. His energy level may not be the same as when he was younger. What happens then?

I never thought about that. For the woman who is looking to be with somebody for the long haul, regardless of what happens, the guy is still going to be younger than her. So, he’s still probably going to have as much or a little bit more energy. No one stays 25 forever. Unfortunately, we all get older.

Tell me about your show ‘COUGARS NYC.

The show is a docu-soap. That’s what I term it. It’s reality. It’s along the lines of the ‘Real Housewives.’ It’s about the lives of four women. Four real-life cougars on a hunt for love in the jungles of New York City. The cast members are Meli’sa Morgan, Henshi Gorodetsky, Hayne Suthon and Shahla Husain. These are women that are all at least 40. They’re all fabulous. All of them are successful in their own careers. They’re confident, independent and they’re intelligent. They’re really fun and funny and have totally different lives. They’re out there looking to date. Sort of like ‘Sex and the City,’ but for cougars.

What has been your experience as a cougar-in-training in the city?

Well, I just lost a ton of weight. I lost like 100 pounds over 19 months. I’ve been at my goal weight for six months. Ever since I lost weight, I’ve been getting in on a bit, been on a couple dates. The other day, this guy that was 19 years old approached me. I told him I was flattered, but he was a little too young for me.

How has losing weight impacted your dating life?

First of all, I have a lot more confidence. It’s different, because now I have to worry about guys approaching me because they think I’m hot. I don’t want that to be the only thing. When I was big, everything was about my personality, and my personality had to really shine, because men weren’t trying to look at me any kind of other way. Losing weight has made me realize how shallow people are. When I was overweight, people didn’t open doors for me. People didn’t really look at me on the street. There wasn’t a whole lot of eye contact going on. And now, it’s a different story.

xscape secretKandi Burruss: Ex-Fiance AJ's Funeral Arrangements & Other UpdatesFuneral arrangements have been solidified for Ashley “A.J.” Jewell, the slain ex-fiance of ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Kandi Burruss.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, the memorial will take place on Oct. 9 at the Ray of Hope Christian Church in DeKalb Country, Georgia.

Meanwhile, Frederick Richardson, the man charged with his murder last Saturday, was denied bail during a court appearance on Tuesday. His defense attorney alleges Jewell pulled a gun on Richardson and drew the first punch during the fatal fight.

TMZ.com reported Jewell was walking and talking after the fight, with sources saying that he didn’t take an ambulance to the hospital but got a ride with a friend. The medical examiner’s office said there were no stab wounds on Jewell’s body.

According to a rep for the Bravo television network, ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ reunion show has been postponed, and an in memoriam note will be added to this week’s episode in honor of Jewell, who frequently appears on the second season of the hit show.

    Mariah Through The Years

      Mariah Through The Years:
For Mariah Carey, having more number one songs than any solo artist in America has been a credit to the company that this five-time Grammy winner has kept since making her music debut in 1990. From people behind the scenes like L.A. Reid and Jermaine Dupri to some of her past loves like Tommy Mottola, Derek Jeter and now husband Nick Cannon, each man has played a significant role in inspiring the music that has made this 39 year-old singer/songwriter famous. Blackvoices.com takes a look at the men who have inspired Mariah Carey over the years.

      Tommy Mottola – Husband
No one is more responsible for Mariah Carey’s success than former Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola. After receiving Carey’s demo from artist Brenda K. Starr, for whom Carey sang backup, he signed her on the spot. While recording her 1990 debut, the two became romantically involved and tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in 1993. Just three short years later, they split, and a divorce was finalized in 1998.

      Luther Vandross – Musical Collaborator
The five-octave singer was fortunate enough to be one of the few entertainers to record a duet with the late Luther Vandross. Their cover of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross‘s ‘Endless Love’ became Vandross’ biggest pop hit. It was the second single released from his ‘Songs’ album and was also included on two Carey albums: ‘Greatest Hits’ in 2001 and ‘The Ballads’ in 2008.

      Trey Lorenz – Backup Singer
In 1992, Carey performed an MTV ‘Unplugged’ special to show nonbelievers that she was not a studio singer. Her cover of the Jackson 5‘s ‘I’ll Be There’ with her longtime backup singer Trey Lorenz was later released as a single and became a number-one hit in the United States. Lorenz was able to score a record deal from the duet, and Carey co-produced his debut. On July 7 of this year, the two performed the song at the Michael Jackson memorial, which was held at the Los Angeles Staples Center.

      Jermaine Dupri – Producer
It’s not a well-known fact that Jermaine Dupri has been working with Carey for nearly 15 years. In 1995, Carey worked with the So So Def Records founder on ‘Always Be My Baby,’ from her ‘Daydream’ album. It became the most successful record on U.S. radio that year. And though these two worked on several remixes together over the years, their magic came a decade later when J.D. produced four songs on ‘The Emancipation of Mimi,’ Carey’s 10th studio album and most successful to date.

      ODB – Musical Collaborator
Since rapping ‘Me and Mariah go back like babies and pacifiers,’ Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the late Wu Tang Clan MC, helped solidify Carey in the world of hip-hop and R&B. The 1995 remix to ‘Fantasy’ became a number-one hit. The friendship between Carey and ODB lasted throughout the years. The songstress even met the rapper upon his release from jail in 2003.

      Mase – Musical Collaborator
‘Honey’ was Carey’s 12th number-one song. Before turning his life over to God and becoming a minster, Bad Boy rapper Mase appeared on the popular remix of the record, alongside the Lox and Diddy. The song, which also had its own video, was featured on Carey’s 2003 remix compilations, aptly titled ‘The Remixes.’

      Derek Jeter – Alleged Beau
Shortly after divorcing husband Tommy Mottola in 1998, the five-time Grammy award winner met New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter at a Fresh Air Fund gala in New York. The couple connected over their interracial parents – black fathers and Irish mothers. The public romance ended short of the one-year mark. In an interview with Parade magazine, Carey said “It was the wrong time. …Our two worlds were just too much for that moment.”

      Eminem – Alleged Beau
From ‘Clown’ to ‘Obsessed,’ Carey has documented her disdain for Detroit MC Eminem in her music. The ‘Glitter’ actress denies they ever slept together, but Slim Shady has consistently rapped that the two were intimate. The rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, sent threats to Carey via the 2009 diss track ‘The Warning,’ which was directed at both Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon.

      Nick Cannon – Husband
Nick Cannon, 28, dated singer-actress Christina Milian and was even engaged to Victoria’s Secret model Selita Eubanks for five months before becoming Carey’s second husband. In 2005, he convinced the Teen Choice Awards to let him present Carey’s award for ‘The Emancipation of Mimi.’ Two years passed, and the couple was reunited in 2007. Their whirlwind romance resulted in a quickie wedding in 2008 at Carey’s Bahamian estate, Windermere.

He also served as a backstage correspondent during the concert special.

  • Tameka Foster: Are Black Women To Blame For Her Negative Image?

Whether her divorce decree from Usher was signed off by the judge or not, Tameka Foster‘s near-two-year marriage to the international music superstar is still over.

    That’s a fact!

Yet, the 40-something-year old single mother of five children (allegedly by three different men) says she was not given a fair shot in the way she was being “judged.”

    That’s a fact!

The Oakland native (pictured above with beautiful dark-skinned actresses Keshia Knight Pulliam and Tasha Smith last year) spoke to Isoul Harris for Upscale magazine’s September/October edition.

    That’s a fact!

In the Atlanta-based Bronner Bros.-owned magazine, she tells the esteemed former Rolling Out newspaper editor that she didn’t fit the image of the kind of woman people thought Usher should marry.
    Usher Raymond
    That’s a fact!

Oh, is that why it didn’t work? That’s a question asked by some. That’s a fact!

“I understand where all the negativity comes from,” she said. “Unfortunately I think that some black women are – subconsciously – not in love with the image they see in the mirror. Therefore in turn they do not love someone like me. I look too much like them.”

    Hmmmm.

The only woman that I think Tameka Foster Glover Raymond looks like is one of my all time black spiritual leaders: Prophetess Juanita Bynum.

    That’s a fact!

    What about you?

Like Foster, Bynum appeared on the cover of best-selling women’s magazine Essence.

    That’s a fact!

A renowned best-selling author and televangelist, the 50-year-old Chicago native is also a regular motivational speaker during Essence Music Festival’s Empowerment Seminars in New Orleans, which is populated mostly by black women.

    That’s a fact!

“People passed judgment without getting to know me,” Foster opined to Harris, then asked, “How can you get the entire concept of who I am from a blog?”

The September/October edition of ‘Upscale’ magazine — with actress Taraj P. Henson on the cover — is on some newsstands now.

    That’s a fact!

  • Dr. Boyce Money: What Chris Brown Can Learn From R Kelly

I spoke about Chris Brown on CNN not too long ago, and I am sure I’ll be talking about him now. Given his shocking 5-year probationary smackdown by a judge, I am sure that Chris has been humbled beyond belief. Even I was surprised to see him get this kind of punishment. But the truth is that when we make personal decisions, there is a piper to be paid, and sometimes that piper wants more compensation than we wish to deliver.

But Chris Brown is far from finished, and I expect him to be back on top in no time. The Chris Brown brand is still worth hundreds of millions of dollars, since corporate America is very good at working around the emotional to secure the logical value of their financial assets. Here are some things to keep in mind as Chris tries to rebuild his damaged career.

If R. Kelly can make a comeback, anybody can. I confess that R. Kelly honestly sickens me. I hate to say it this way, but the idea of a man doing what he is alleged to have done to that little girl makes me as angry as you can ever possibly imagine (and yes, I do believe that was him in that video). What disturbs me even more is that the American public let the entire issue go as soon as Kelly released another hit song. This sends a horrible message to young black women, reflecting the fact that our culture does not value their well-being as much as we value a hit song about going to the club, getting drunk and having irresponsible sex at the end of the night. Sorry homeboy, but you can’t serenade your way into my good graces or that of any other conscientious African American. There are simply some lines entertainers cannot cross and being found “not guilty” is not the same as being found innocent.

In spite of the obvious critique one can thrust on R. Kelly, the oddest thing is that R. Kelly’s model of career recovery can serve as an instruction manual for Chris Brown. The first segment of that lesson came during R. Kelly’s first BET interview after the child pornography allegations were made. During the interview, I noticed that the singer kept repeating the phrase, “Just focus on my music.” He repeated the phrase several times, as if his business manager had coached him to do so. Upon processing things later, the translation here was simple: If you are focused on his music, you will forgive him for the fact that he’d been accused of doing nasty things to someone’s 13-year old daughter. Yes it’s sick. Yes, it bothers me. But yes, it’s the truth and it has worked quite well for R. Kelly and his business model (notice that it took him a while to release his latest album after the trial – the public typically cools off and forgets almost anything you’ve done if enough time passes).

Similar to the R. Kelly situation, I’ve noticed that many female music fans really don’t care that Chris Brown is a man who seems to believe that it’s O.K.to use a woman’s face as a punching bag. The report that he used the big ring on his finger to inflict even more damage to Rihanna reminds you of the late Ike Turner. I hope he takes his domestic violence counseling seriously, since he can’t go on living like this.

In the music industry, fans are quick to accept eccentric behavior from celebrities. The public took no issue with Michael Jackson’s problematic relationships with children and there are many other scenarios in which a hit record is enough to take value judgments off the radar screen. Personally, I find myself in constant shock at the kind of language Lil Wayne’s female fans allow him to use to consistently disrespect them. It almost seems that a polite Lil Wayne would not sell nearly as many records as the drunken, outlandish rapper who appears to have a serious drug problem.

Value systems aside and with the focus back on business, a black entertainer can rebuild his career after an arrest by doing the following things:

    1) Just say that Jesus healed you. People always buy that one. It worked for R. Kelly. References to God, even when insincere and blatantly hypocritical, invoke deeply entrenched sensibilities within African Americans. Personally, I need proof that you’ve really changed, not just your statement that Jesus came to you in a dream.

    2) Sincerely apologize. People always love a good apology.

    3) Make a really hot song. If people are dancing to your music, they usually forget that you might want to punch out their daughter or think that she’s a garden tool. Unfortunate, but true.

    4) Remember the truth: People really don’t care that much about the celeb’s personal life and are looking for an excuse to forgive him anyway. I recall speaking to someone who works for a major network, and I was in awe over how nonchalant she was about the R. Kelly situation. All she kept saying was, “Well, he ISSSS talented,” as if his talent forgives him for any sin committed in the present, past or future. I bumped into a radio exec at a major station in Chicago and listened to him essentially say the same thing when explaining why his station adjusted its policy against playing R. Kelly music shortly after the allegations. The fact is that people just don’t care.

Chris Brown’s brand will remain strong in the music industry. From a business standpoint, it is also ironic that being arrested may actually be a “coming out” party for him, reinventing him for the world as the tough, borderline thug that many women seem to love (remember when Lauren London said she had a crush on Ol Dog from Menace to Society – a man known for being the craziest gang banger in entertainment history?). These coming out parties are common, as you typically see young actresses do sexy magazine covers on their 18th birthday (i.e. when “Simply Raven” became “Sexy Raven” and when Rudy Huxtable played a prostitute in her latest film), or male entertainers trying to look mean and “tatted up” to break away from their good boy image (i.e. Lil Bow Wow….I mean, Bow Wow). It’s all about branding. The craziest thing about the Chris Brown situation is that being arrested for beating a woman could actually work to his advantage. So, our adoration for Chris Brown (actually, other people’s adoration, since I don’t respect any man who would do that to a woman) is a reflection of our society and a nasty look in the mirror for all of us. I should say, however, that I consider Chris Brown to be far different from R. Kelly: He is still a very young man who makes mistakes and could possibly become a decent adult with guidance and significant intervention – which spoiled celebrities seldom receive.

Don’t be surprised to see Chris hanging out with more rappers, where it’s actually a good thing to be arrested. He’s going to have a few more tattoos, a meaner “mug” on his next album and present a brand that embraces the hardcore image, yet not so hardcore that you won’t believe him when he sincerely apologizes and says that Jesus saved him. The new Chris Brown will be interesting.
