• Pam Grier: Blaxploitation Icon to Join Cast of TV’s ‘Smallville’

Pam Grier will return to television early next year…and will be playing a bad guy.

Well, a bad girl.

Again!

The CW announced that the 60 year-old 1970s Blaxploitation film icon is joining the cast of the hit drama series ‘Smallville,’ which is based on the DC Comics Superman series.

The savvy casting choice is the first for the ‘Jackie Brown’ actress since Showtime’s ‘The L Word’ ended last year.

Grier will play a villainess named Agent Amanda Waller, who brought on the destruction of Smallville in one of part of the Superman mythology.

In the storyline, the character escaped the infamous Chicago Cabrini-Green housing projects with her surviving family after her family was murdered. She became a congressional aid and then a member of the elite semi-secret government agency, the Suicide Squad, where she earned the nickname ‘The Wall.’ Later, Agent Waller served as Secretary of Meta-human Affairs under President Lex Luthor.

According to TV Guide, Grier will make her debut in January and she will appear in multiple episodes throughout the season.

janet jackson open american music awardsOn the heels of the announcement that Whitney Houston would take the stage at the 37th Annual American Music Awards – the ‘I Will Always Love You’ singer’s first performance at the show in a decade – comes more big news.

Janet Jackson has just signed on to open the Nov. 22 live broadcast with a special opening medley.

This marks the second time the ‘Control’ singer has opened a major award show this year. A few months ago, she performed ‘Scream’ in tribute to her late brother Michael Jackson at the ‘MTV Video Music Awards.’

American Music Awards producer Larry Klein couldn’t be happier to have Jackson on the show’s roster. He said, “We’re thrilled about having Janet Jackson open this year’s show. She is an incredibly dynamic performer and I think the audience will be excited to see what she has in store.”

Jackson joins previously announced performers include Rihanna, Green Day, Shakira, Lil’ Wayne, Mary J. Blige, Keith Urban, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, The Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie UnderwoodbDaughtry and Adam Lambert.

Jackson has a busy schedule lined up in the next few months. On Nov. 18, she will sit down with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts for her first interview since the death of her brother. Her second compilation album, a two-disc set called ‘Number Ones’ will be released on Nov. 17. The album includes a new single ‘Make Me,’ produced by Rodney Jerkins and Jackson. She also is hitting the big scree, again. Jackson just wrapped shooting of ‘Why Did I Get Married Too,’ the sequel to the successful 2007 Tyler Perry-helmed flick. A trailer for the film hit the Web last week.

• The Week That Was: T-Boz Opens Up About Brain Tumor, More to Mo’Nique’s Movie Drama

TLC CrazySexyCoolTLC singer T-Boz's brain tumor brain cancer People magazine
News is spreading like wildfire about TLC singer T-Boz‘s revelation that she battled a brain tumor.

The 39-year-old Grammy Award winner told People magazine that she waged that battle in secret for three years.

In the Oct. 12 edition of the magazine, she revealed having a seven-hour surgical procedure back in 2006 during which doctors peeled the tumor away from the brain stem.

The divorced single mother of one said she was battling the tumor during her stint on Donald Trump‘s popular reality competition ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ but didn’t want to make it known to the public. “I didn’t want pity. I was there to help sick children.”

On the most recent season of the series, which was won by comedienne Joan Rivers, T-Boz (born Tionne Watkins) competed to help raise funds for the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia. As a child, she was diagnosed with the lifelong blood disorder.

Named one of the “50 Most Beautiful People” by the magazine in 1994 and 2000, T-Boz said that people are “shocked” when she tells them the news, but added “I won’t let you feel sorry for me.”

So there may be more to the hype of Mo’Nique sabotaging her big chance at being nominated for an Academy Award for her much-buzzed about role in the Oprah Winfrey/Tyler Perry-produced movie, ‘Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.’ There may actually be a smear campaign in place so that another one of the film’s co-star can capitalize on any negative press that the former ‘Showtime at the Apollo’ hostess endures. Yes, Mo’Nique hasn’t been available at glitzy film festivals touting the film, but sources tell us that the married mother of three has been prioritizing getting her new late-night show – which debuts Oct. 5 on BET – off the ground. We don’t know the promises that were made to her by the filmmakers of ‘Precious,’ but there may be some validity to her high demands. As for the Hollywood Reporter story about publicist Tresa Sanders resigning due to Mo’Nique’s difficulty, that’s not true. Sanders, who has help launch the careers of Jay-Z, Jermaine Dupri, Keyshia Cole, and handled publicity for Da Brat, Mary J. Blige, Pretty Ricky and Nelly Furtado, said Roger Friedman ‘s report is not accurate. “Contrary to the rumors, I did not quit,” she said. “Mo’Nique is one of the most talented actors in Hollywood. It was an honor to work with her and to get to know her as a human being. She’s at a point in her life where her achievements should be heralded.”

If renowned civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton is the new lover in actress LisaRaye McCoy Misick‘s life, no one seems to be talking. Well, at least not anyone from their respective camps. Queries made to McCoy Misick‘s off-and-on publicist Lynn Allen Jeter have gone unanswered. Meanwhile, Sharpton’s longtime rep, Rachel Noerdlinger, told us: “Since Rev. Sharpton publicly announced the end of his marriage in 2004, he has chosen not to comment on personal matters.”
But insiders have seen the “couple” painting the town since the 42-year-old former first Lady of Turks and Caicos accompanied Sharpton to Michael Jackson‘s September memorial service. Tongues have wagged. Natasha Eubanks of the black celebrity gossip Web site Young, Black Fabulous put the alleged affair on blast earlier this week, saying that “Lisa knows she’s not getting onto any of these ‘society and political’ events without a man who could bring her along. She’s also starved for attention from the media–surprise, surprise–so Al is her ‘in’ into that world.” Wowza.

Looks like people are loving ‘The Cleveland Show.’ The Black-oriented spin-off of FOX’s animated romp ‘The Family Guy’ drew the best numbers among adults between the ages of 18-49 during its Sunday night debut. According to Nielsen, the animated series – featuring the voice of Tony Award and Emmy Award-nominated actress Sanaa Lathan — was the second-best overall behind the premieres of the much-hyped ‘Jay Leno Show‘ two weeks ago. And rapper Kanye West didn’t even have to shed a tear.

Late, great author E. Lynn Harris‘ latest book, ‘Mama Dearest,’ has debuted on the New York Times Best Seller List. According to the tome’s publisher, Karen Hunter, the book will land at number 15 on the prestigious list next week. ‘Mama Dearest’ follows the scandal and drama of a singer/actress and her recently imprisoned mother. Harris died unexpectedly on July 23. The new novel is his 11th book to chart on the best-sellers list, and there may be more where that comes from. According to unconfirmed reports, seven unpublished manuscripts written by the groundbreaking author have been recovered from his computer’s hard drive. Computer forensic experts reportedly were able to locate and open password-protected files that were found on Harris’s personal laptop.

Real Houswives of Atlanta Music Drama Kim Zolciak Kandi Burruss Tardy for the Party

Just when it seemed like ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Kim Zolciak‘s pop star ambitions would have to be put on hold, things have now been smoothed out for the single mom.

On the latest season of the hit Bravo series ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta,’ new cast member Kandi Burruss of Xscape fame helped re-work Zolciak’s song ‘Tardy for the Party.’ During the first season, the blond vixen played cast-mate Nene Leakes a snippet of a country song called ‘Tardy for the Party,’ which the outspoken funny-woman encouraged her to record. She even shared studio time with superproducer Dallas Austin, which didn’t yield any results. This season, she seemed to have better fate with Burruss, the Grammy Award-winning songwriter of songs recorded by Destiny’s Child, TLC and Whitney Houston.

Burruss wrote the track for free, but, according to RadarOnline.com, the soReal Housewives ofng’s producer, Don Vito filed a lawsuit against Zolciak for non-payment for the music to the song.

At the time of its removal last week, the track was a Top 10 single on iTunes.

Now, everything seems right back on track. Late last week, Burruss appeared on ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ explaining that everything has been settled and everything has been ‘worked out.’ The song is now available on digitally again.

“There almost was a lawsuit,” Burruss revealed.’ “Kim wrote the original version with an older guy and she had an agreement to pay Don Vito for the music and didn’t pay him when she said. She was going to pay him because she has so much going on, she had every intention to pay him. I think that the communication wasn’t right, but they worked it out.”

Bravo has since released a compilation of footage from ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ set to the dance track. (See below)

There’s still no word on whether or not Zolciak is recording a full album or if the single was just for show, but next week’s episode is said to capture her back in the studio.

• Five Things You Might Not Know About The Black American Worker

Black American WorkerIt’s no secret that the recession is hitting African-Americans especially hard. Last month black unemployment stood at 14.5 percent, vs. 8.6 percent for whites. However, nearly 18 million blacks are still toiling in the civilian labor force, representing over 11 percent of America’s 155 million workers. As the country enjoys a day of rest on Monday to celebrate all working Americans, Black Voices is taking time to shine a much-deserved spotlight on the black worker with five facts you might not know…

working black women1) She Brings Home The Bacon
The black worker is more likely to be female; but then again, there are simply more black females. Fifty-three percent of black workers age 20 and over are women, while 47 percent are men – commensurate with their representation in the overall population.

2) The Tax Collector in the Mirror
It’s not surprising that a black person is more likely than a white one to be a bus driver or a health care aide. But did you know that blacks are also more likely to be tax examiners or collectors; dietician or nutritionists; crossing guards; bill collectors; and telemarketers?

3) On The Government Payroll
Who says big government is a terrible thing? While facing discrimination in many sectors, blacks are more likely to work for the federal government than other Americans. We represented 17.8 percent of the federal workforce in 2007 compared to 10.1 percent of the general population

4) Bearing the Union Label
For years blacks have been more likely to work in a union, bringing them 12 percent higher wages than their non-union counterparts. However, black union participation has been falling for years, from nearly 32 percent in 1983 to less than half that today. In 2008, 14.5 percent black workers were union members vs. 12.2 percent of white workers. It’s no wonder that on average blacks are….

Before These Stars Quit Their Day Jobs…
Mary J. Blige and other stars had important jobs before they were famous, even if they may have been low-income. What are the most underpaid and underappreciated professions?

Before They Were Famous

Mary J. Blige is known for her creatively coiffed crown of hair for good reason…

Stephen Lovekin, Getty Images

Mary J. Blige:
At-Home Hairdresser

From Starpulse.com: “Blige spent the first few years of her life in Savannah, GA, before moving with her mother and older sister to the Schlobam housing projects in Yonkers, NY. Her rough life there produced more than a few scars, physical and otherwise, and Blige dropped out of high school her junior year, instead spending time doing her friends’ hair in her mother’s apartment and hanging out.”

Mary started to make her own way in the world in a profession that many take for granted. The at-home hairdresser is a very important staple of many communities, as she uses her skills to help women who can’t afford a professional salon to stay pampered and beautiful. We salute you!

Denzel Washington is no stranger to the hair business himself…

John Shearer, WireImage

Denzel Washington: Barber
From Tiscali: “It’s often been said that the boy picked up his desire to act from the flamboyant communication that went on around him at this time. He certainly picked up a desire to work – the family ethic was very strong – and young Denzel found himself labouring in barber shops and beauty parlours from the age of 11.”

The neighborhood barber is an important institution in many communities. Even though they don’t get paid much, men’s salons are like private social clubs that allow them to relax and connect at an affordable price. Workers in these establishments not only groom the body — they soothe the soul.

Ellen is known for her dancing, but she used to be a different kind of mover back in the day…

Jordan Strauss, WireImage

Ellen Degenres: Car Wash Driver
From CareerBuilder.com: “I actually liked my first job. I was driving cars out of a car wash, you know, once the car comes out, you get in and you wipe it. That was exciting to me to drive the nice cars and wipe down the [dashboard] with Emerald.”

We often take for granted all the folks at the local war wash. They may be working for little more than tips, but they keep our cars clean and fresh, making a huge positive impact on our daily lives.

Jennifer Lopez has displayed a high level of discipline and organization in plotting her megastar career. She must have learned those skills during one of her first jobs…

Jennifer Lopez: Legal Assistant
From 2spare.com: “Long before Jennifer Lopez sang, danced and acted her way to superstardom, she briefly traded in her velour tracksuit for a suit of the pin-striped variety while working at a law office.”

It’s hard to imagine someone as driven as Jennifer Lopez being an assistant, but J.Lo paid her dues by helping her bosses meet their goals. It’s hard for anybody to put others first, but that’s what assistants do in every field. They deserve to be appreciated for this.

Before Angela Bassett became a huge star in front of the camera, she earned her living doing business on the other side of the lens…

Michael Tullberg, Getty Images

Angela Bassett:
Photo Researcher

From Yuddy.com: “After working as a beauty salon receptionist and photo researcher, Bassett got started with her acting career in New York Theater, after which she landed her first role-as a prostitute-in the 1985 TV movie ‘Doubletake,’ starring Richard Crenna and Beverly D’Angelo. The following year she landed her first official film role as a TV reporter in ‘F/X.’”

Whenever we look at a magazine, or in a book with pictures, we are seeing the work of some one like Bassett in her early career. We never think of the faceless, nameless men and women who look for all the photos that illustrate concepts, news and ideas in every facet of our daily lives, ranging from Web sites to education. But every one of those photos was hand-selected by someone, most often an anonymous, but dedicated and not-too-well-paid pro. What would life be like without all the hundreds of pictures we enjoy every day?

On a pre-taped interview for the long-running CNN talk show, the Jive Records singer didn’t say much about anything as he sat there with the support of his mother, Joyce Hawkins, and high-powered attorney Mark Geragos (who admitted on air that he had no idea who the singer was before he savagely beat his girlfriend, pop star Rihanna).

And then, in the new edition of People magazine, Brown, 20, does his first print interview – and in it, he’s talking about how Oprah Winfrey dealt with the widely reported Feb. 8 altercation on her show.

“I commend Oprah on being like, ‘This is a problem,’ but it was a slap in my face,” Brown told the magazine. “I did a lot of stuff for her, like going to Africa and performing for her school. She could have been more helpful, like, ‘Okay, I’m going to help both of these people out.’”

When contacted by TMZ.com, Winfrey’s camp issued the following response:

“Oprah is very appreciative that Chris Brown performed at her school, but she takes domestic abuse very seriously. She hopes he gets the counseling he needs.”

• Michael Jackson: Finally Laid to Rest But Never to Be Forgotten

thriller

Following two months of planning, Michael Jackson will finally be laid to rest on Thursday evening in California’s legendary Forest Lawn Glendale where he is expected to be interred in a hidden monument in a mausoleum made of marble and mortar.

The private memorial for family and friends will reportedly find the “King of Pop” entombed beside his childhood idols, Walt Disney and Larry of the ‘Three Stooges.’

“The family believed this is what Michael would have wanted,” a source close to the family told the New York Post.

While the iconic singer expected to be honored in the highest regard, including a performance by soul legend Aretha Franklin, an appearance by mentor and dear friend Diana Ross, and 12 burial spaces being purchased, Jackson’s mother, Katherine, requested the judge to sign off on the funeral expenses.

This morning Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff granted the current administrators of Jackson’s estate to pay for Jackson’s funeral and interment. The Associated Press reported that no one contested who would pay the costs, however Beckloff expressed concerns about whether Jackson’s estate could afford it.

The current attorney for the administrators of Jackson’s estate, Jeryll Cohen, stated that the estate had enough funds to cover funeral services in full. “The expenses are extraordinary, however, Michael Jackson was extraordinary,” she said.

As for the increased security of the 13th Century Italian patterned cemetery, observers can expect the streets surrounding Forest Lawn to be closed to the public 24 hours prior to service, in addition to restricted airspace over the venue.

The multiple Grammy Award-winner’s three children Prince Michael, Paris, and Blanket are all expected to place written letters alongside his signature white glove that read, “Daddy, we love you, we miss you,” said Jackson’s brother, Marlon.

He went on to tell UK newspaper, ‘The Mirror,’ that the King of Pop will be given a special wig of long black locks to wear in his gold coffin and a makeup artist has been hired to render his facial features.

• Tameka Foster: Are Black Women To Blame For Her Negative Image?

Whether her divorce decree from Usher was signed off by the judge or not, Tameka Foster‘s near-two-year marriage to the international music superstar is still over.

That’s a fact!

Yet, the 40-something-year old single mother of five children (allegedly by three different men) says she was not given a fair shot in the way she was being “judged.”

That’s a fact!

The Oakland native (pictured above with beautiful dark-skinned actresses Keshia Knight Pulliam and Tasha Smith last year) spoke to Isoul Harris for Upscale magazine’s September/October edition.

That’s a fact!

In the Atlanta-based Bronner Bros.-owned magazine, she tells the esteemed former Rolling Out newspaper editor that she didn’t fit the image of the kind of woman people thought Usher should marry.
Usher Raymond
That’s a fact!

Oh, is that why it didn’t work? That’s a question asked by some. That’s a fact!

“I understand where all the negativity comes from,” she said. “Unfortunately I think that some black women are – subconsciously – not in love with the image they see in the mirror. Therefore in turn they do not love someone like me. I look too much like them.”

Hmmmm.

The only woman that I think Tameka Foster Glover Raymond looks like is one of my all time black spiritual leaders: Prophetess Juanita Bynum.

That’s a fact!

What about you?

Like Foster, Bynum appeared on the cover of best-selling women’s magazine Essence.

That’s a fact!

A renowned best-selling author and televangelist, the 50-year-old Chicago native is also a regular motivational speaker during Essence Music Festival’s Empowerment Seminars in New Orleans, which is populated mostly by black women.

That’s a fact!

“People passed judgment without getting to know me,” Foster opined to Harris, then asked, “How can you get the entire concept of who I am from a blog?”

The September/October edition of ‘Upscale’ magazine — with actress Taraj P. Henson on the cover — is on some newsstands now.

That’s a fact!

• Chris Brown: In His Own Words Regarding Larry King Interview

A rep for Chris Brown sent the following statement to BV Newswire today regarding the reports of the singer’s televised interview for ‘Larry King Live’ due to air Sept. 2 on CNN.

Unlike other outlets, we are running it in its entirety:

“There have been reports on the internet that I didn’t remember what happened that night with Rihanna. I want to try and set things straight.

That 30 seconds of the interview they used of me was taken from a one hour interview during which that same question was asked something like 4 or 5 times — and when you look at the entire interview you will see it is not representative of what I said. “

“The first four times – or how ever many times it was – I gave the same answer — which was that I didn’t think it was appropriate for me to talk about what happened that night. I said it was not right for me and it really wasn’t fair to Rihanna. The fifth time – or whatever it was – I just misspoke. I was asked, “Do you remember doing it?” and I said, “No.”

“Of course I remember what happened. Several times during the interview, my mother said that I came to her right afterwards and told her everything. But it was and still is a blur. And yes, I still can’t believe it happened because it is not me or who I am or is what happened like anything I have ever done before.

Chris Brown“As I have said several times previously, I am ashamed of and sorry for what happened that night and I wish I could relive that moment and change things, but I can’t. I take full responsibility for my actions. What I have to do now is to prove to the world that this was an isolated incident and that is not who I am and I intend to do so by my behavior now and in the future.” Embedded video from CNN Video

Top 30 Sexiest Actresses of All-Time

Top 30 Sexiest Actresses of All Time:
First off, we acknowledge that ‘sexiness’ is extremely subjective, but since when has that stopped anyone from offering their opinion? It certainly hasn’t kept us from taking note of the women who have served it up to us over and over again on the silver screen. That kind of consistency deserves recognition. That’s why Black Voices took time out to compile a list of the top 30 sexiest actresses of all time. Although many of the women on our list have excelled in various media throughout their careers, we decided to rank each actress based on their “sex appeal in feature films, roles and scenes.” Whether you agree or disagree with our rankings, we want to hear your opinion. Why not give us your own top 30 sexy actresses list? Please post your thoughts, comments and/or opinions in our community message board. Let the sexiness begin!

Getty Images / WireImage / Getty Images

30. Thandie Newton
It’s fitting that British actress Thandie Newton got the lead slot in our countdown. After all, compiling a list like this is sort of a ‘Mission Impossible’ given the fact that sexiness is completely subjective. Still, Newton sizzles on screen when the role calls for it, whether playing the femme fatale opposite Tom Cruise or the violated wife of Terrence Howard in the 2005 drama ‘Crash.’ No matter what your taste, leaving Newton off our list would have been an injustice.

Ferdaus Shamim, WireImage.com

29. Tracy Camilla Johns
Tracy Camilla Johns first came to our attention in Spike Lee‘s debut feature, ‘She’s Gotta Have It’. The mere fact that she hasn’t left our consciousness since then is a testament to her sex appeal. Oh yeah, we forgot to mention that she played a nymphomaniac dating three men at the same time. She followed that up with a scene-stealing striptease in 1991’s ‘New Jack City.’

Island Pictures, Everett Collection

28. Vivica A. Fox
Vivica Fox managed to heat up the screen even when playing an ice queen a la Mr. Freeze’s lusty assistant in ‘Batman and Robin.’ We should’ve expected as much from a character named Miss B. Haven. It seems Ms. Fox is destined to live up to her real name, having played sexy roles in ‘Booty Call’ and ‘Two Can Play That Game.’

Getty Images

27. Robin Givens
As if posing in a 1994 issue of Playboy Magazine wasn’t sexy enough! Robin Givens actually played a sex siren opposite Eddie Murphy in ‘Boomerang.’ Givens’ character Jacqueline ultimately seduces Murphy’s character Marcus Graham. Some say she played the same role in real life with her former husband, boxer Mike Tyson.

Time Life Pictures/Getty Images

26. Paula Patton
We can see why fellow R&B crooner Robin Thicke decided to put a ring on the finger of this sultry actress (let alone write a song about her). Of course we’re sure that’s not the only reason, but it couldn’t have hurt. Paula Patton makes the list for roles in ‘Déjà vu’ and ‘Idlewild.’ Her leading men would be lost without the light she brings to the screen.

Jim Spellman, WireImage.com

25. Nichelle Nichols
We couldn’t possibly leave the original intergalactic hottie off of this list! If Nichelle Nichols were the future of space travel, what self-respecting Trekkie wouldn’t want to get beamed up? We would mention that she was hot enough to entice Captain James T. Kirk into TV’s first on-screen interracial kiss, but that wouldn’t be saying nearly enough. In her prime Lieutenant Uhura was light years ahead of the competition.

Fotos International, Getty Images

24. Eartha Kitt
Eartha Kitt epitomizes sexiness. Just her name evokes the signature purr she unleashed as Catwoman. The eyes, the hands, the voice, the legs — they all add to her allure — yet her sexiness is even greater than the sum of her parts. We’ll admit we haven’t seen most of her movies, but it doesn’t take much to be convinced. Besides, have you ever seen her performance of the song Santa Baby?

Michael Ochs, Getty Images

23. Vanity
Even though she was a ‘Nasty Girl’ in Prince‘s off-shoot group Vanity 6, Vanity (born Denise Katrina Matthews) had everyone in awe over her the 1985 flick ‘The Last Dragon.’ Leroy Green wasn’t the only teenage boy in pursuit of Matthews’ character Laura Charles. Sho ’nuff! Whoever plays her role in the upcoming remake has some pretty sexy heels to fill. (That’s right, we said heels.)

Lynn Goldsmith, Corbis

22. Lauren London
When people hear the letters “L.L.” they may automatically associate them with rapper-actor L.L. Cool J. Well, not this time! Hot 24-year-old vixen Lauren London comes in at number 22 for her role as “Erin ‘New New’ Garnett” in the 2006 film ‘ATL.’ She may not have many roles to her credit, but something tells us she’ll more than live up to any future billing.

• The Week That Was: Vibe magazine to get fresh blood, Ola Ray wants pay

Vibe magazine seems to be rapidly rising from its proverbial ashes with new owners, who this week announced that Jermaine Hall will helm the resurrected title. A native of St. Lucia, raised in Queens, Hall is the former editor-in-chief of King magazine, and previously served stints as a music editor of The Source, and a webmaster of Vibe. He will now serve as the editor-in-chief of Vibe and its website. “I’ve always been very confident about anything dealing with editorial, so I’m definitely not intimidated,” the Iona College graduate told the website mediaite. “I’m very excited. I love all the eras of Vibe but one of my favorite eras is Alan Light‘s tenure [1994-1997] – the book was at its broadest during that time. I’m looking to recapture that feel, but bring it up to date.” The Quincy Jones-founded urban music magazine shuttered in June, after 16 years of publication, when its previous owners could not find new buyers or restructure the company’s debt. It was bought earlier this month by InterMedia Partners, a private equity fund and now is managed by the Vibe Lifestyle Network, led by Vibe’s original business leaders Robert Miller and Leonard Burnett and Uptown magazine co-founder Brett Wright. A new issue is planned for November/December.

It’s time to pay Ola Ray. Or that’s what she says. The original music video girl, who starred in Michael Jackson‘s seminal ‘Thriller’ video and appeared in its best-selling ‘Making Of’ home video, is seeking unpaid royalties for her work from 25 years ago. Ray’s attorney filed Los Angeles court documents stating she is a creditor to the singer’s estate and is owed an undetermined amount of money.

The actress, whose most recent “acting” credit dates back to 1987, sued Jackson in April, claiming he had failed to pay her royalties that she was due for the past four years. That suit, and two others filed by the video’s director John Landis, remains unresolved.

According to reports, one of Landis’ lawsuits claimed he also hadn’t been paid royalties on the “Thriller” video for several years.

When Jackson died in June, the St. Louis native – who has a Grammy Award in her possession (that she accepted on his behalf) made the media rounds. “I am freaking out, I can’t believe that he is gone,” she said. “He was my hero as well as my mentor. And I really respected him as an entertainer and we made history together, and he will always be the best.” Now she’s listed as one of the creditors of his estate.

Now that Chris Brown has been officially sentenced and ordered to stay away from Rihanna for five years, his mother is speaking out – in the name of Jesus. “I just want to say from the bottom of my heart thank you for your continued support. I’m sorry I wasn’t allowed to speak to anyone as this case was ongoing,” Joyce Hawkins wrote on her son’s official web site TheChrisBrownFanClub.com. “I made a promise. I would never be ashamed of him no matter where I am or who I talk to. You see this whole thing isn’t about Chris, it’s about God. He wants to show all of you the goodness of him through Chris. Chris will be addressing all of his fans very soon. We love you so much and so does God.” During an interview last year on ‘The Tyra Banks Show,’ Brown revealed he witnessed his mother being physically abused by her spouse.

LaToya Jackson will not be doing ‘Dancing with the Stars’ (as previously rumored in the press), but will be spread like butter on other ABC-affiliated shows. This week, the network announced that the best-selling author and former Playboy magazine cover girl will guest co-host ‘The View’ on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18. The woman comedian Paul Mooney once referred to as “La Dangerous” will also sit down with Barbara Walters for a one-on-one interview on the network’s newsmagazine ’20/20,’ scheduled to air on Sept. 11. She will discuss her relationship with late brother Michael Jackson and to explain for her belief that he was murdered.

6/1/09: Minnie Riperton
A very fitting homage will be paid to late, great songbird Minnie Riperton when a new batch of the acclaimed TV One docu-series ‘Unsung’ hits the small screen this month. Best known for her signature ballad ‘Lovin’ You,’ the Chicago-born singer/songwriter’s career and life were cut short after a three-year battle with breast cancer in the late 1970s. After Riperton’s cancer diagnosis, she went public instead of retreating, serving as a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. . She was only 31 years old when she died at the prime of her career. ‘Unsung’ premieres June 7 at 8 PM ET, repeating at 11 PM, as well as Thursday, June 11 at 10 PM and Friday, June 12 at noon and midnight.
