  • Timberwolves F Jefferson to miss 2 games (AP)

    Minnesota Timberwolves center Al Jefferson will miss the next two games because of an illness in his family. The Timberwolves say Jefferson left the team to be with an ill family member in Florida. He will miss the game Friday night against Dallas and on Saturday at Memphis. Jefferson is expected to rejoin the team early next week.

  • Injured Spurs PG Parker may miss a week (AP)

    Spurs guard Tony Parker is not expected to play Monday against Toronto because of a sore left ankle. The Spurs said Sunday that Parker's injury was a mild sprain that could sideline him for a week. Parker rolled his ankle Friday night in the second quarter of a loss at Portland. He did not return to the game.

    Jason Richardson and the Phoenix Suns had no trouble putting their only loss of the season behind them, even against unbeaten Boston. One game after going scoreless for just the third time in his career, Richardson had 34 points and 10 rebounds to lead Phoenix to a 110-103 victory over the Celtics on Friday night.

    The Dallas Mavericks surprised themselves in a bad way with a season-opening loss at home. Then they hit the road and stunned the defending NBA champions. Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points and the Mavs were 25 of 32 from the free throw line, snapping a six-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Lakers with a 94-80 victory Friday night.

    LeBron James isn't quite over the flu. He's not that far off. James scored 22 points in 19 minutes in his return to the Cleveland lineup after staying home sick for the last game, but the San Antonio Spurs beat the Cavaliers 105-98 on Friday night. Though not completely healthy, James said he still felt pretty good after going 7 of 14 from the field and grabbing six rebounds.

  • Angels’ Lackey to start Game 1 of ALCS (AP)

    John Lackey will start Friday night's Game 1 of the AL championship series against CC Sabathia and the Yankees, getting the nod from manager Mike Scioscia before the Angels traveled to New York on Wednesday. Lackey pitched 7 1-3 innings to lead Los Angeles to a 5-0 win over the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the division series.

  • Yankees might try 3-man ALCS rotation (AP)

    The Yankees might go with a three-man rotation against the Los Angeles Angels in the AL championship series. CC Sabathia is scheduled to start Friday night's opener, with A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte as New York's other two primary starters. The shortened rotation would allow manager Joe Girardi to keep Joba Chamberlain and Chad Gaudin in the bullpen.

  • Warriors suspend disgruntled G-F Jackson (AP)

    The Golden State Warriors suspended Stephen Jackson for two exhibition games Saturday after the unhappy captain left the bench during an exhibition contest in Los Angeles. The veteran swingman picked up five fouls and a technical in less than 10 minutes Friday night while playing against the Lakers at the Forum.

    Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez stood together as Yankee Stadium roared. Teixeira had the chills. Teixeira hit a leadoff drive in the 11th inning to give New York a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night and a 2-0 lead in their AL playoff series.

    Kevin Garnett's knee is better, and he's waiting with uncharacteristic patience for the rest of his body to catch up.     The Minnesota Twins have wanted out of the Metrodome for years. They're playing as if they want to stay a little longer. Jeff Manship's first major league win was well-timed for the Twins, who got a grand slam from Delmon Young and hung on for a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night that cut Detroit's AL Central lead to one game.

    Jake Peavy delivered the kind of performance the Detroit Tigers desperately need. Peavy delayed Detroit's chance to move closer to the AL Central title, pitching the Chicago White Sox past the slumping Tigers 8-0 Friday night. Detroit's lead was cut to one game by Minnesota, which beat Kansas City 10-7.

    Joba Chamberlain pitched as if his place in the New York Yankees' postseason rotation was at stake. Winless in eight starts since beating Boston on Aug. 6, Chamberlain responded with his first victory in 1 1/2 months and led the Yankees over the Red Sox 9-5 Friday night. Earlier this week in Anaheim, Calif., manager Joe Girardi and Yankees coaches met with the 23-year-old right-hander.

    Brett Favre's non-traditional arrival in Minnesota is not stopping Vikings coach Brad Childress from taking a traditional approach to the team's preseason finale against Dallas. The 39-year-old quarterback will not play against the Cowboys on Friday night. "I don't see the upside," Childress said on Wednesday.

  • Angels acquire LHP Kazmir from Rays (AP)

The Angels acquired Kazmir, a two-time All-Star, for two minor leaguers and a player to be named. The left-hander was 8-7 with a 5.92 ERA this season for the defending AL champion Rays.

    The Los Angeles Angels did more than just upgrade their unsteady rotation. They added a two-time All-Star who's only 25 years old. Scott Kazmir was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the AL West leaders Friday night, a major move for a high-scoring team that already had World Series aspirations. The Angels landed Kazmir for two minor leaguers and a player to be named.
