    Hideki Matsui took a meaty cut, watched the ball fly and winced when it hooked a foot foul. That's about all that went wrong for him. Matsui put the world in World Series MVP, earning the award by homering, doubling, singling and driving in six runs Wednesday night as the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 to claim their 27th championship.

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was having an MRI on his right leg in the wake of his injury against the Kansas City Chiefs.  Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said the results will be reviewed by Dr. Russell Warren later Monday, oct. 5, 2009,  and the team will make an announcement after the doctor talks to Manning.

    Eli Manning's teammates expect he'll make his 83rd consecutive start on Sunday. Manning had an MRI on his right foot Monday, which revealed he has plantar fasciitis, an inflammation and swelling of the tissue on the bottom of the foot.   • Favre ‘probable’ for game vs. Packers (AP)

    Brett Favre won't be missing his first game against the Green Bay Packers. The Minnesota Vikings quarterback is listed as probable for the showdown on Monday night. Favre has been limited in practice all week because of a sore right foot, but he will make his 273rd consecutive start. All-Pro left guard Steve Hutchinson is listed as questionable with a back injury.

  • Foot puts Favre on Vikes’ injury report (AP)

    Brett Favre is on Minnesota's injury report for the first time this season. The 39-year-old quarterback was listed Thursday as being limited in practice because of a foot injury. After the Vikings beat San Francisco last Sunday, Favre complained of aching in his right foot, left knee, both shoulders and neck.

  • Yao encouraged by progress of recovery (AP)

    Encouraged by progress in his recovery from major foot surgery, Yao Ming said Wednesday he will return to action — just not next season. "The (X-ray) picture looks good. The bones heal well," he said in an interview with Houston television station KRIV. He also said, however, that there is no chance that he will play in the 2009-10 NBA season.

  • Broncos sign ex-Dolphins DL Holliday (AP)

    The Denver Broncos signed veteran defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday Saturday, the same day the team trimmmed its roster by releasing 12 players. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Holliday had 3 1/2 sacks last season for the Miami Dolphins. Defensive lineman Tim Crowder was among the players cut Saturday by new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels.
