  • Wisconsin braces for return of Favre (AP)

FILE - In this Aug. 21, 2009 file photo, Minnesota Vikings fans wait for the arrival of new Minnesota Viking quarterback Brett Favre(notes) before warm ups for an NFL preseason football game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Minneapolis. For almost 20 years, Brett Favre was like a member of every Wisconsin family. To be from Wisconsin is to be a Green Bay Packers fan, and the fun-loving quarterback rejuvenated the storied franchise, brought the Lombardi Trophy back to Titletown and turned "Cheesehead" from an insult into a boast. No wonder an entire state is angst-ridden over Sunday's game at Lambeau Field against the Minnesota Vikings, the Packers' loathsome rival, and Favre's new team.

  • Chris Brown: Still Talking … About Being Mad at Oprah Winfrey

Chris Brown: Still Talking ... About Being Mad at Oprah WinfreyR&B crooner Chris Brown is talking to the media again. He’s promoting an upcoming album and last night (Oct. 21), the Virginia native paid a visit to hip hop radio personality Angie Martinez‘s popular New York City radio show. The 20-year-old singer – who was sentenced to180 days community service sentence after assaulting his girlfriend Rihanna — revealed that he is “tight” with media mogul Oprah Winfrey for not supporting him. He also vowed he will never hit another woman.

“I don’t diss Oprah because I respect her as a woman [and] what she does for women all over the world, but I just feel me and her did so many things together,” Brown stated. “I just felt that at the time where would’ve I need a helping hand — not to boost my career just me as a person — for her to reach out and talk to me and Rihanna or something and make it like, ‘look this is what it is, this is wrong, this is right, this is not what it’s supposed to be….’ I’m not saying having me on the show … just help. That’s all I was asking for. Because at the end of the day I thought [Oprah and I] had that relationship to where it could be like that.”

Shortly following the headline-grabbing altercation last February, Winfrey – who suffered domestic abuse, herself — told her international television audience: “If a man hits you once, he will hit you again.”

Brown doesn’t believe that comment applies to him.

“Statistically that goes into that, but me, I’m a guy who learns from his mistakes fast. I’m a guy who’s real like afraid of that, so I learn from my mistakes. I can be certain as Christopher Maurice Brown that it won’t happen (again),” he pledged. “At the end of the day, I’m doing my domestic violence counseling classes … and I see the hurt that it’s put a lot of people through. I’ve seen the hurt that it’s put my family through. Whether it’s been my family, Rihanna, [or] anybody and I don’t want to inflict that on anymore.”

Kandi Burruss: 'Real Housewives' Star Ex-Fiance A.J, Dead After Club Brawl
‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Kandi Burruss‘ ex-fiance Ashley ‘A.J.’ Jewell was killed after a fight outside popular Atlanta strip club, The Body Tap, late Friday night.

He was rushed to Piedmont Hospital, where he later died.

Atlanta Police Lt. Keith Meadows confirmed, “It appears he was involved in an altercation in the parking lot and received a severe blow to the head.”

Meadows said that the police have developed a person of interest in the case, adding, “we’ve made contact with him to question him about the incident.”

    (SEE ARREST UPDATE BELOW.)

The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter’s publicist, Lisa Nelson, confirmed to WSBTV.com that Burruss was “stunned and speechless” and that “the family is asking for privacy during this very difficult time.”

Burruss, a former member of the platinum ’90s R&B group Xscape, recently revealed that she and Jewell split.

The couple, who were engaged earlier this year, have chronicled their relationship on the Bravo reality show ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta.’

Burruss is also currently raising Jewell’s twin daughters.

“AJ’s murder is horrific, not only for his family, including the six beautiful children he is leaving behind, but also for Kandi, who obviously still loves him despite their broken engagement,” Atlanta-area entertainment journalist Isoul Harris, who has a professional friendship with Burrus told BV Newswire today. “Also, this is another case of senseless violence that’s not only rampant in Atlanta, but all over the country.”

UPDATED, 11:33 a.m.: Police told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper that they have charged Frederick Richardson with voluntary manslaughter in the beating death of Jewell. Richardson is currently hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in the fight. He will be jailed once released by medical staff. Though the cause of the fight is still unknown, police confirmed that witnesses were cooperating.

‘It’s a great thing that a suspect has been arrested in this case,” Harris added. “It surely brings a little comfort to his friends and family.”

In the meantime, Burruss, who’s a single mother of one daughter, took to Twitter.com early Saturday morning to break her silence about the tragic loss. “I’m bout 2 give my swollen eyes some rest now. I just wanted to say thanks 2 everyone for their prayers. I gotta get up & go 2 my uncle’s funeral. I could never in a million years imagine this happening.”

The Atlanta native, who also changed her Twitter profile picture to a flick of her and Jewell, ask fans to remember Jewell leaves behind six children. “Please pray for AJ’s children, that’s who im the most concerned 4. Im just in one of those moods where I dont wanna talk, I dont wanna b held & told its gonna b ok. I just wanna cry myself 2 sleep, alone.”

“Right now, she is just trying to wrap her head around the fact that he is gone,” Harris concluded.

  • What Black Women Need to Be Happy

Black women are tired of hearing Black men say that we are bitter, unhappy, or that we alone are responsible for the high numbers of single family homes and fatherless children. We’re not. Black women are tired of the bullshit, the blaming, the failure of men to step up to take responsibility for the mistakes they’ve made. We, just like women of other races, deserve to have a decent, loving, committed and honorable man in our arms. We deserve wonderful fathers for our children. We deserve to have respectful Black men be our husbands as well our lovers. Where are these men?

  • Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian Get Married: 5 Questions I’d Like to Ask

Today, we are going to use an interesting story in black celebrity news to teach a short lesson called “How NOT to make major life decisions.” Let’s start the conversation, shall we?

NBA Star Lamar Odom has decided to marry Khloe Kardashian, whose sister Kim usually takes up all the family spotlight. The story goes that Khloe was hosting a “Welcome to LA Party” for new Laker, Ron Artest. Khloe allegedly ran the bill up to $3,000 and Lamar agreed to pay it. Could four weeks of love be built on a more stable foundation than money? The wedding ceremony was, in many ways, a fairytale: Celebrities everywhere, a triple arch of white roses, a serenade by the singer Babyface taking place at a private home in Beverly Hills. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire would be proud.

But after the last piece of cake has been eaten and the wild honeymoon lovemaking is over, Lamar and Khloe then have to confront the reality of their choice. Based on what I’ve read, I’d be willing to bet a pair of Air Jordans that their marriage doesn’t last 3 years. I’d hate to rain on anyone’s romantic parade, but we’ve got to be honest when it comes to choices like this.

Here are some questions I’d love to ask Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian:1) You’ve been dating for just a month? Are you serious? Love is a tricky thing. Most of us have been fooled by the first few weeks of a new relationship, thinking that Mr/Mrs. Right Now was Mr./Mrs. Now and Forever. There is scientific evidence that the chemical reactions in your brain during the lovemaking process are similar to mild injections of cocaine, which explains irrational behavior during the beginning and end of relationships. I don’t doubt that Lamar and Khloe are in love, but most of us know that the first month of a relationship makes it difficult to distinguish between being “in love” and being “in lust.” Why sign a legal contract until you’re completely sure?

    2) What’s up with the prenup? You DO have a prenup don’t you? I can define the word “prenup” with the following sentence: Four years, $32 million dollars. Yes, that’s the size of Lamar’s latest contract with the Lakers, and the reason I hope this 29-year old has protected his assets. Sure, Khloe’s family isn’t struggling either, but I presume that Lamar has taken the time to protect his wealth. If he hasn’t, then he deserves whatever happens as a consequence.

    3) Baby rumors anyone? After hearing that Khloe might be pregnant, some of this started to make sense. I presume that the baby belongs to Lamar, since Khloe doesn’t exactly look like she’s been carrying anybody’s baby for longer than a month. Lamar also has some baby mama drama of his own, with the children he created in a prior marriage. If you ever want a recipe for massive financial strain, try getting married too quickly and having a bunch of children in the process. It takes a few minutes to make a baby, but the child support can last a lifetime. We might be tempted to think that Lamar’s massive wealth makes child support a breeze, but the problem is that the more you earn, the more they make you pay. There’s nothing more difficult than being an ex-NBA player still paying NBA-level child support.

    4) What about your other kids Mr. Odom? When asked about the wedding, Liza Morales, Lamar’s ex-wife, sounded as if she were trying to survive a terrorist attack or a death in the family. According to TMZ, Odom’s ex-wife had this to say:

“Yes, the circumstances over the last few weeks have been upsetting but none of my actions publicly or from the privacy of my home could be classified as a meltdown. I have maintained a brave face for my children who are my main concern and I remain strong for them.” She went on to say she has “the support of my family and friends and Lamar’s family have been nothing but supportive of me and the kids during this difficult time. I wish Lamar nothing but happiness we all deserve to be happy.”

What’s also interesting is that Lamar’s other kids didn’t come to the wedding. I wonder if Khloe can smell the ensuing drama?

OK, now that we’ve used Lamar and Khloe’s situation as our case study on how NOT to make major life choices, let’s find our true teachable moments (you know I don’t just do celebrity stuff unless there is a lesson in there somewhere):

The bottom line is this: Marriage is a serious decision, not something that should leave you focused on the elegance of the ceremony or the romance of being able to pick out bridal gowns. Some of us get so excited about the idea of having marital legitimacy that we forget the fundamental truth that LOVING together means LIVING together. If you haven’t known someone long enough to be sure you can live with them, then you probably don’t know if you can ever truly love them.

Secondly, we must be aware of the drug of lust, in which the chemical highs of sex can lead us to make damaging life choices. Many a celebrity has been left financially devastated by poor relationship choices in their 20s and 30s. Finally, if people have lives as complicated as Khloe and Lamar, at least a year of study is necessary to figure out if they can cope with all the complex externalities of each other’s personal lives: baby mama drama, professional issues, addictions, financial habits, etc. If you marry someone after a month and find out later that they have serious problems you can’t deal with, you only have yourself to blame.

This is not just a lesson for Khloe and Lamar, but a lesson for all of us. If you claim that you never made mistakes when you were young and in love, then you are probably just a big ol liar.

  • Don’t Let Your Spouse Control All of Your Finances

Financial News Blast for the week of September 26, 2009 – Click on the link for the title to read the article on the given topic:

    1) Don’t let your spouse control all of the family finances: This is a great article on how the entire family should be involved when making financial decisions for the household. When I wrote my book, “Financial Lovemaking 101,” I noticed that far too many American families are allowing their entire financial future to be controlled by one partner. You should be aware of what’s going on with your money, even if you’re not the one making all the decisions.

    2) Harvard Study: A Lack of Health Insurance Causes 45,000 Deaths Each Year: The healthcare reform debate has literally become a matter of life and death. We’ve got to find a way to get this done.3) How to get a home loan with bad credit: Many Americans suffer through credit problems. Where you’ve been doesn’t matter nearly as much as where you’re going. Getting a home loan can open the door to wealth and also create opportunities for you to rebuild your credit. Take a look at this article to find out how.

    4) The most lucrative college degrees: Going to college doesn’t guarantee a strong financial future. It’s going to college and choosing the right major that makes all the difference. Make sure you pick the right major for you and your children.

    5) Financial illiteracy is an epidemic in the United States: Banks and corporations are certainly predatory in their behavior. But you don’t have to allow yourself to be their prey. You must find a way to obtain basic financial literacy, for a lack of financial literacy was one of the primary causes of the 2008 economic downturn. If this epidemic is not managed, we are going to have serious problems for many decades to come.

  • Michael Jackson: Finally Laid to Rest But Never to Be Forgotten

    thriller

Following two months of planning, Michael Jackson will finally be laid to rest on Thursday evening in California’s legendary Forest Lawn Glendale where he is expected to be interred in a hidden monument in a mausoleum made of marble and mortar.

The private memorial for family and friends will reportedly find the “King of Pop” entombed beside his childhood idols, Walt Disney and Larry of the ‘Three Stooges.’

“The family believed this is what Michael would have wanted,” a source close to the family told the New York Post.

While the iconic singer expected to be honored in the highest regard, including a performance by soul legend Aretha Franklin, an appearance by mentor and dear friend Diana Ross, and 12 burial spaces being purchased, Jackson’s mother, Katherine, requested the judge to sign off on the funeral expenses.

This morning Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff granted the current administrators of Jackson’s estate to pay for Jackson’s funeral and interment. The Associated Press reported that no one contested who would pay the costs, however Beckloff expressed concerns about whether Jackson’s estate could afford it.

The current attorney for the administrators of Jackson’s estate, Jeryll Cohen, stated that the estate had enough funds to cover funeral services in full. “The expenses are extraordinary, however, Michael Jackson was extraordinary,” she said.

As for the increased security of the 13th Century Italian patterned cemetery, observers can expect the streets surrounding Forest Lawn to be closed to the public 24 hours prior to service, in addition to restricted airspace over the venue.

The multiple Grammy Award-winner’s three children Prince Michael, Paris, and Blanket are all expected to place written letters alongside his signature white glove that read, “Daddy, we love you, we miss you,” said Jackson’s brother, Marlon.

He went on to tell UK newspaper, ‘The Mirror,’ that the King of Pop will be given a special wig of long black locks to wear in his gold coffin and a makeup artist has been hired to render his facial features.

  • Ebony Dating For The Classy, Mature Adult

    Looking for Mature Black Man?

I know its hard out there to find a good black man but there is hope and tactics you can employ to find your man today.
Since I moved to Palm Beach County, the running joke in my family about the availability of quality black men has been how much do you want to lower your standards?

How low you ask? To one criterion: Breathing.

Its a joke, but it speaks to the real perception many single black women have about their chances to find a mate not just here, but in this country.
