Tim Hudson agreed to a $28 million, three-year contract with the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, giving the team a wealth of starting pitching and setting up a likely trade to bolster the offense. Hudson could have returned to the Braves under a $12 million option, but the sides focused on a longer deal after the right-hander showed he had overcome major elbow surgery.
Defensive back Ty Law has agreed to terms on a deal with the Denver Broncos. Kevin Poston, Law's agent, confirmed the news Friday in an e-mail to The Associated Press. The agreement came after Denver's media availability and a Broncos spokesman said the team had no comment. Law is expected to sign the deal Saturday, pending the passing of his physical.
Mark McGwire is back in baseball, reunited with Tony La Russa as the St. Louis Cardinals' hitting coach. La Russa agreed to return for a 15th year as manager Monday with a one-year contract, the first time he hasn't had a multiyear deal with the team. All of his coaches will return except for Hal McRae, who will be replaced by the former star.

This week on “Keeping it Real with Rev. Al Sharpton,” the good reverend and I discussed some issues that many people might find interesting. First, there was the conversation about love and money. Most of us know that money matters in life. We tend to think about money every day and a good way to end up in the dumps is to have someone take your money away from you. Money is also a weapon of mass destruction in many relationships, especially in the African American community. And just for the record, Rev. Al stands firm that there is nothing to his rumored relationship with Lisa Raye. If only I were privileged enough to have people think that I had a thing for Lisa Raye….now THAT would make my day!
Our second topic of discussion was Michael Vick. I personally believe that in spite of media reports to the contrary, Nike is still waiting in the wings to sign Vick to a real deal, because Vick has always been the real deal among NFL athletes. The great challenge for Vick is that he has to start from scratch to rebuild his respectability as a top notch quarterback. He also has to let that ‘dog fighting’ issue get behind him.

The NBA has told teams it's going ahead with replacement referees, days after the league thought a deal had been reached with locked-out officials. The league sent a memo Tuesday informing teams it had "no expectation of concluding a timely labor contract." The memo, obtained by The Associated Press, follows the latest failure in negotiations.
The Charlotte Bobcats came to terms late Thursday with free agent guard Ronald "Flip" Murray on a one-year, $1.99 million deal. Agent Mark Termini said Murray chose the Bobcats after also having discussions with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 12.2 points last season coming off the bench for the Atlanta Hawks, and gives coach Larry Brown more options in the backcourt.
Power forward David Lee is staying with the New York Knicks for a one-year deal Thursday worth about $8 million. Lee sought a multiyear contract. But with the Knicks hoping to save salary cap room for the summer of 2010, he had to settle for the chance to become an unrestricted free agent next year. Lee averaged 16 points and 11.7 rebounds last season.

Guard Keith Bogans is the latest newcomer to the San Antonio Spurs. Bogans' agent, Michael Harrison, says he is set to sign a guaranteed one-year deal with the Spurs before training camp starts next week. San Antonio will be Bogan's fifth team in seven seasons. The 29-year-old Bogans averaged 5.6 points playing for Orlando and Milwaukee last season.
The owner of the Memphis Grizzlies and the team's staff are meeting with Allen Iverson as the sides move closer to a deal bringing the veteran guard to a very young team. Iverson said on Twitter on Sunday night he was meeting with the owner and staff Monday and that he wanted to help the Grizzlies develop a winner.
The Minnesota Timberwolves wasted little time moving on after being rebuffed by Ricky Rubio. Two days after the 18-year-old point guard backed out of a deal to join the Timberwolves this season, Minnesota signed restricted free agent Ramon Sessions to an offer sheet Friday. The Milwaukee Bucks will have seven days to match the four-year, $16 million offer.
