Gucci Mane Sentenced To A Year In Prison

If life could intimate art, the cover to Gucci Mane‘s forthcoming Dec. 8 album ‘The State vs. Radrick Davis’ would prove to be an irony of sorts. According to ‘MTV News,’ the ‘So Icy’ rapper was arrested and sentenced to a year in prison today stemming from a probation violation.

The startling news comes as shock to many given Gucci’s unyielding presence in today’s hip hop scene. The Atlanta native, who was named one of MTV’s hottest MCs, has been featured on chart-topping singles from likes of Mario, Omarion, Mariah Carey, and is also expected to appear on Timbaland‘s forthcoming album ‘Shock Value 2’ — not to mention the rapper’s most recent collaboration with R&B superstar, Usher for his lead single ‘Spotlight.’

Despite Gucci (legally known as Radrick Davis) serving six months in prison last year for failing to meet a previous court-ordered 600 hours of community service, he may also serve the same length of time for his current violation.

Upon his release last March, he spoke with ‘MTV News’ about his 2008 incarceration. “It was a challenge for me,” he said. “I’m just happy my team kept my music going strong for me. And I’m happy I recorded so many records so people could hear me.”

• Morris Chestnut: Returning to Roots with New ‘V’ TV Series

Boyz n The Hood
Black Hollywood heart-throb Morris Chestnut is making a return to where he began; the ‘Boyz n the Hood’ actor stars in the new ABC series ‘V,’ which premieres Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. ET.

The thrilling new drama is a reimagining of the hit 1980s series about the world’s first alien encounter. With huge spaceships simultaneously appearing over 29 cities around the world, the Visitors (or V’s) seem to promote a message of peace. Through their generous offer to share advanced technology, the V’s quickly build a following that may be overlooking a more malevolent agenda.

Chestnut plays Ryan Nichols, a Wall Street whiz who is faced with a life-altering decision when the V’s show up. It’s a long way from his early days – where he cut his teeth starring in the Patti LaBelle-fronted sitcom in the early 1990s.

Since then, he’s become a urban movie box-office draw with movies such as ‘The Best Man,’ ‘Two Can Play That Game’ and ‘Not Easily Broken.’

Doing a show like nothing else currently on TV is what prompted the Cerritos, California native to get back into the small screen.

“This was not a science-fiction show that was going to be driven by special effects,” he told USA Today. “This was a science-fiction show that was going to be driven by the characters with special effects as a backdrop, and that was what appealed to me.”

• Dwight Eubanks: Keeping Things Real Regarding ‘Housewives of Atlanta’

Dwight Eubanks: Keeping Things Real Regarding 'Housewvies of Atlanta'

Make no mistake about it, no one behind the scenes is telling ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Dwight Eubanks what to do. The Atlanta native went from having a simple cameo as Nene Leakes’ scene-stealing “gay boyfriend” to becoming a main cast member on the second season of the hit Bravo reality television series.

“I am not an actor. I was asked to come on and be a part of the show and to be real…I am not the sixth housewife,” Eubanks told the BV Newswire yesterday.

“If I wanted to be with a woman, I will be with a woman and if I want to be with a guy, then I will be with a guy,” he declared. “I like all fruits, but I do have a problem with [people] dwelling on ‘Dwight the gay housewife.’ Let’s get to know Dwight.”.

As of late, his no-holds-bar attitude has made his relationships with some of the ‘Housewives’ stars a bit tense.

“I just don’t understand it,” he noted. “Some of the other people have problems with me being friends with the other women….girls harp on situations [like] ‘You said this,’ or ‘You did that’ versus saying ‘B****h, did you say this?’ and going directly to the source of the problem.”

But, Eubanks isn’t holding it against them.

“They perceive me as a b***h. I have nothing but love for all of them.”

What many viewers of the successful Bravo television network franchise do not know is that the self-proclaimed style purveyor actually knew Sheree Whitfield and Lisa Wu Hartwell well before becoming fast friends with his close gal pal Leakes.

“I knew Sheree and her husband Bob,” he revealed. “She had a store called Bella Azul [and] my partner at the time was doing Lisa’s hair and I knew of Lisa when she was going through her divorce situation [with Keith Sweat] but I didn’t really meet her until the show.”

As for the show’s resident vixen, he adds, “I was really more friendly with Greg than Nene and we grew to be a part of each other’s lives and it grew to being what it was.”

These days, the fashionable entrepreneur has grown incredibly fond of the newest ‘Housewives’ star, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss.

“I met Kandi this year and never knew about Xscape,” Eubanks explained. “I like her as a person and her mother and I clicked and before I knew it I had dinner at their house.”

Now, the unlikely pair do dinner together, often, and according to the former Saks Fifth Avenue style director, they have become a sort of adopted family.

Until now, little has been known about the man that is Dwight Eubanks. Recently he’s been a little more open about his past – telling Essence.com that his minister parents beat him for playing with his sister’s dolls, until his grandmother helped them accept him for who he is. Born at Grady Hospital and raised on Atlanta’s Southside area, Eubanks credits his godfather with nurturing his love for hair by allowing a young Dwight to apprentice in his salon.

As for his feelings on the show as a whole? “The reality show is what it is. We don’t have to agree. They have gone through a whole season disagreeing. And agreeing is not reality. I like to move on.” There are talks that Eubanks may soon have his very own television show, but until then he’s happy doing what he’s been doing for the past 21 years.

“Reality television don’t pay no money. I had this life before [‘Housewives’] came on and I have four [mortgage] notes to pay – that’s a lot and I haven’t ventured off to doing any new ventures lately,” he declared.

He doesn’t know how they will figure out what to do for a show of his own, adding, “most days I don’t know what to do with myself. I know I am a lot.”

Off-camera, you can catch him at one of his two successful Purple Door Atlanta salons. “I still do hair every day and I enjoy being at the shampoo bowls. I like doing everything that I do. This is why I choose this profession.”

xscape secretKandi Burruss: Ex-Fiance AJ's Funeral Arrangements & Other UpdatesFuneral arrangements have been solidified for Ashley “A.J.” Jewell, the slain ex-fiance of ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Kandi Burruss.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, the memorial will take place on Oct. 9 at the Ray of Hope Christian Church in DeKalb Country, Georgia.

Meanwhile, Frederick Richardson, the man charged with his murder last Saturday, was denied bail during a court appearance on Tuesday. His defense attorney alleges Jewell pulled a gun on Richardson and drew the first punch during the fatal fight.

TMZ.com reported Jewell was walking and talking after the fight, with sources saying that he didn’t take an ambulance to the hospital but got a ride with a friend. The medical examiner’s office said there were no stab wounds on Jewell’s body.

According to a rep for the Bravo television network, ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ reunion show has been postponed, and an in memoriam note will be added to this week’s episode in honor of Jewell, who frequently appears on the second season of the hit show.

• Method Man: Arrested for Tax Evasion

Method Man Tax Arrest

Grammy Award-winning rapper and Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man turned himself in yesterday to the Staten Island District Attorney on felony charges related to a $32,799 tax bill from 2004 to 2007.

The 38-year-old rapper-actor (born Clifford Smith) was also in hot water with the government in 2008. He owed the IRS $52,503 in payments, and, as a result, his Lincoln Navigator SUV was repossessed.

Judging from all of his debt, one would think that the ‘Soul Plane’ actor is suffering from a case of memory loss. And that just may be the case in this scenario.

“Myself, I’m a pothead,” he told the New York Daily News in March. “Sure [the tax department] sent letters to my house, saying, ‘We need this money.’ They started sending them in 2002. Here it is 2009, and I never paid this s–t because I don’t think like that!”

Although Smith may have a slight disability, district attorney Daniel Donovan claims the rapper can still face prison time.

“Taxes are the burden that all citizens share in a civil society, whether you are an ‘average Joe’ on the street or a high-profile rap artist,” he said in a statement. “Because of the alleged action of people like Mr. Smith, law-abiding citizens face higher taxes and reduced government services. Failure to properly report and pay your taxes is a crime against all citizens and will be aggressively investigated and prosecuted.”

Following his arrest on Oct. 5, Method Man was arraigned and released. He is due back in court Dec. 9. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.

X-Scape Secret

Kandi Burruss: Breaking Her Silence About Ex-Fiance AJ Jewell's Murder‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Kandi Burruss is formally breaking her silence about the tragic death of her ex-fiance Ashley ‘A.J.’ Jewell.

Jewell, who has appeared in several episodes of the hit Bravo reality series, was killed after a fight outside popular Atlanta strip club, The Body Tap, late Friday night. As previously reported by BV Newswire, Frederick Richardson was charged with voluntary manslaughter in the beating death of Jewell the next day.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Richardson was an employee at the strip club and Jewell was a part-owner.

The former Xscape front-woman released a statement on Sunday afternoon about her loss.

“I am devastated by the loss of AJ. His death comes on the heels of the death of my beloved Uncle Ralph and with both of them gone, my heart is heavy with grief.”

The Grammy Award-winning songwriter said that she spoke with AJ just two hours before she got the phone call that he was in the hospital. She added, “Never in a thousand years did I think it was going to be the last time I heard his voice. He was taken way too soon. There are so many things that I should have said to him, wanted to say to him…but now it’s too late.”

Burruss previously took to Twitter.com early Saturday saying that she did not want to talk, but that she was thankful for prayers and kind words she received from the public. In her new statement, she expressed her gratitude at the support she has received.

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of my family and friends — and that means my Twitter and Facebook friends as well — for the beautiful words of encouragement, prayers, and the sweet condolences. I make it through these difficult days because of you.”

As for Jewell, he leaves behind six children. Burruss asked for people to “please pray for his children, his family and [her own daughter] Riley – they too are grieving the loss of an incredible man, son, brother and father.”

The Atlanta native lamented, “I wish you all had gotten to know the AJ we all knew and loved,” and left a few choice words for the world.

“I know this is cliché’ but I urge everyone to treat each day as if it’s your last and tell that special someone you love them today. Don’t wait. It may be too late.”

No information on Jewell’s funeral services were released.

• Kim Zolciak: ‘Real Housewives’ Star Talks About Her Past Working in Strip Club

'Real Housewives' star talks about being a stripper.Being a stripper may have been part of Nene Leakes‘ history, but ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ star Kim Zolciak is clear she has never been a part of that lifestyle.

“I’m honest about the fact that I’m dating a married man, [If I’d been] a stripper, why wouldn’t I tell you?” the aspiring singer charged to Life & Style magazine.

That doesn’t mean she hasn’t worked at a strip club, though. Zolciak admits having “served as a waitress” at Cheetah, a downtown Atlanta strip club.

The mother of two has always said that her mystery boyfriend “Big Poppa” (rumored to be Atlanta-based real estate mogul Lee Najjar) has afforded her a lifestyle in which she does not have to work.

Zolciak tells the tabloid that the father of her two daughters, Brielle, 12 and Ariana, 7, has given her “no child support and no alimony.”

Before her role in the hit Bravo reality television series, the blonde bombshell said she was actually working as a nurse.

In last week’s episode of ‘Housewives,’ she discussed reconciling with Big Poppa, who is said to make an appearance later this season.

Now, Zolciak is focused on a new wig line and a budding singing career, thanks to co-star Kandi Burruss‘ assistance in reworking her song ‘Tardy for the Party.’ The single has reached the top 10 dance charts on iTunes, and Bravo just released a video montage set to the track on its Web site.

Earlier this week, Eric Jermone Dickey, RM Johnson, Tina McElroy Ansa, Clarence Nero, Tracie Howard and Laura Gilmore gathered at Outwrite Books in Atlanta, where Harris lived and often began his tours.

Earlier this year, Harris signed on for a three-book deal with Karen Hunter Publishing, which released ‘Mama Dearest’ this week. Journalist-turned-author Karen Hunter launched her Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster imprint two years ago. At the time, the Pulitzer Prize-winning scribe had no plans to enlist Harris as one of her writers – that is until he called her in January for business advice. With his editor gone from Random House, the 54 year-old was itching to make a change.

What Hunter, who has penned New York Times best sellers for the likes of Karrine Steffans, LL Cool J and Wendy Williams, said she remembers most is the Detroit native’s giving spirit.

“It was ironic that he called me out of the blue,” the former New York Daily News columnist told BV Newswire yesterday. “He got my number from one of my other authors, and after I listened to what he was going through, I was in a position to help him. The next week, we put together a contract and were able to buy ‘Mama Dearest.’”

‘Mama Dearest’ ended up being his final tome. It features the return of one of Harris’ most popular characters, Yancey Harrington Braxton, and ventures away from the taboo theme of down-low gay black men that has been consistent throughout his novels. Instead, he tells the story of a mother and daughter.

Harris remains the first and only Black author to date to have 10 back-to-back New York Times best-selling novels. Yet, his stories have not translated to the big screen like the works of other black novelists such as Terry McMillan (‘Waiting to Exhale’) or even Toni Morrison (‘Beloved’). “He talked to me about what he was going to do in L.A. with the movie, but he was disheartened he didn’t have the big movies like Terry, who is like his contemporary in terms of writing style,” Hunter revealed. “He wanted to see his books translated to the big screen.”

She noted, “It’s a weird thing with us. The gay issue and the stigma within the black community is still a tough one to overcome. I can’t name a blockbuster successful movie that had a gay love scene with men.”

Shortly before his death, Harris was said to have taken meetings to discuss a possible movie based on one of his novels, in addition to working to develop a play based on his debut, ‘Invisible Life,’ with Ashford & Simpson.

Ultimately, Hunter, who is busy penning Janet Jackson‘s autobiography and her own book, called ‘Niggardly,’ wants the tour to remind people of what a special person Harris was. Though she only knew him for a short time, she said the way he lived his life truly touched her.

“From a writing standpoint, he broke down many barriers, and I think his biggest legacy will be bringing authors together,” she said. “This tour came about because I was getting so many phone calls [from people saying] ‘What can I do?’ Everybody has an E. Lynn story of generosity and giving and reaching back.”

“His death is not to be in vain,” Hunter added. “And we have to keep that mission of bringing people together alive, and I think watching all of these great authors take time out, and they are stopping their own [book] tours, to pay tribute to him is something we can definitely continue.”

• Chris Brown: In His Own Words Regarding Larry King Interview

A rep for Chris Brown sent the following statement to BV Newswire today regarding the reports of the singer’s televised interview for ‘Larry King Live’ due to air Sept. 2 on CNN.

Unlike other outlets, we are running it in its entirety:

“There have been reports on the internet that I didn’t remember what happened that night with Rihanna. I want to try and set things straight.

That 30 seconds of the interview they used of me was taken from a one hour interview during which that same question was asked something like 4 or 5 times — and when you look at the entire interview you will see it is not representative of what I said. “

“The first four times – or how ever many times it was – I gave the same answer — which was that I didn’t think it was appropriate for me to talk about what happened that night. I said it was not right for me and it really wasn’t fair to Rihanna. The fifth time – or whatever it was – I just misspoke. I was asked, “Do you remember doing it?” and I said, “No.”

“Of course I remember what happened. Several times during the interview, my mother said that I came to her right afterwards and told her everything. But it was and still is a blur. And yes, I still can’t believe it happened because it is not me or who I am or is what happened like anything I have ever done before.

Chris Brown“As I have said several times previously, I am ashamed of and sorry for what happened that night and I wish I could relive that moment and change things, but I can’t. I take full responsibility for my actions. What I have to do now is to prove to the world that this was an isolated incident and that is not who I am and I intend to do so by my behavior now and in the future.” Embedded video from CNN Video
