Gucci Mane Sentenced To A Year In Prison

If life could intimate art, the cover to Gucci Mane‘s forthcoming Dec. 8 album ‘The State vs. Radrick Davis’ would prove to be an irony of sorts. According to ‘MTV News,’ the ‘So Icy’ rapper was arrested and sentenced to a year in prison today stemming from a probation violation.

The startling news comes as shock to many given Gucci’s unyielding presence in today’s hip hop scene. The Atlanta native, who was named one of MTV’s hottest MCs, has been featured on chart-topping singles from likes of Mario, Omarion, Mariah Carey, and is also expected to appear on Timbaland‘s forthcoming album ‘Shock Value 2’ — not to mention the rapper’s most recent collaboration with R&B superstar, Usher for his lead single ‘Spotlight.’

Despite Gucci (legally known as Radrick Davis) serving six months in prison last year for failing to meet a previous court-ordered 600 hours of community service, he may also serve the same length of time for his current violation.

Upon his release last March, he spoke with ‘MTV News’ about his 2008 incarceration. “It was a challenge for me,” he said. “I’m just happy my team kept my music going strong for me. And I’m happy I recorded so many records so people could hear me.”

  • Rihanna and Chris Brown: The Financial Value of Rihanna’s Pain

I hated what Chris Brown did to Rihanna. I was angered, disappointed and irritated by the fact that many are quick to forgive egregious behavior on the part of celebrities, and a hit song can forgive all sins. At the same time, celebs are just like the rest of us, full of complexities that the world may never come to understand. Rihanna has walked away from Chris and she is now telling the entire world how bad of a man he is, and we’re all taking her side.

The problem for Rihanna, however, is that her actions aren’t making much sense.

Rihanna’s recent whirlwind media tour has included the likes of ABC News, MTV and other major media outlets. Throughout this tour, she has allowed the world to enter into her dark reflection on the relationship she had with Chris Brown, with that reflection seeming to have almost no productive purpose. I am not sure why the he-say/she-say between two 19-year old kids should be the concern of the nation. But then again, I am sitting here writing about it, so I am as guilty as everyone else.

The truth is, clearly, that Rihanna could have used this incident as a teachable moment and then moved on with her life. But that wouldn’t be nearly as profitable as doing a media tour attacking Chris.

The point here is clear and quick:

A personal tragedy is usually leveraged in order to sell a book or album: Did you notice how tennis star Andre Agassi revealed his drug addiction when his book was released? What about when Mackenzie Phillips announced that her father, well-known performer John Phillips, molested her as a child? Stories like this are a great way to get people to read your book or buy your records. Notice that it took Rihanna several months to start talking about Chris Brown in public. That was probably because she had to finish up her tracks. By the way – her album is scheduled for release in a few days. The Chris Brown story will be the primary driver of her album sales.

Now, I am a Finance Professor and a capitalist. Well, I am mostly capitalist, to a point. I can understand why Rihanna’s handlers are milking the cow till the udders fall off. The story is interesting and like hungry kids in a candy store, we are salivating to find out more about what happened. But the truth is that we only know most of what occurred, not everything: All we really know is that they got into a fight and Chris won. But we also know that Chris lost the war because he is the one who got arrested. Is there anything else we need to know? Is there anything new that Rihanna is telling us other than vague and “clearly objective”(LOL) things like “his eyes had no soul.” What the heck does that mean anyway?

While we can respect Rihanna’s decision to use this situation as a chance to build her brand (similar to when Juanita Bynum was allegedly beaten by her husband and then declared herself to be “the face of domestic violence”), the truth is that we probably shouldn’t fall for the hype. We should realize that this was an unfortunate situation, with many lessons to be learned about domestic violence in the black community. Rihanna will sell her records, and Chris will have to rebuild his own brand. But at the end of the day, this media whirlwind created by Rihanna is, for the most part, an opportunity to not only punch back at Chris, but a chance to make a little dough in the process.

As the rapper TI might say, “It is what it is.”

      10/2/09: Pretty Ricky:
Following a controversial viral video clip from one of its most known members earlier this year, R&B group Pretty Ricky will finally release their third album, aptly titled ‘Pretty Ricky.’ The chart-topping group, which features Spectacular, Diamond Blue, Slick’Em, and their newest buddy/addition Lingerie, feels their Nov. 17 release is too good to explain. “The songs are too sensual to describe in words,” says Diamond. “You have to hear it to fully grasp the erotic experience of the records.” The group’s new lead single, ‘Tipsy In This Club,’ received a mixed response over the summer when Spectacular debuted the track via his eye-brow raising YouTube clip.

      9/28/09: Angie Stone
R&B diva Angie Stone is ready to hit fans with some surprising stuff! On Nov. 24, the brown-skin soul sister will release her second project, titled ‘Unexpected,’ on legendary label Stax Records. According to Stone, the album’s title is a reflection of the direction that she took in recording the opus. “This album is something that no one would have anticipated coming from me,” she said. “My father always encouraged me and everyone else he knew to reach out and make a leap of faith, and that’s exactly what I’ve done.” ‘Unexpected’ features the lead single ‘I Ain’t Hearin’ U’ and the poignant ballad ‘Think Sometimes.’

  • @Feminista09 Bows At The Alter Of @Unclerush

    Posted by: Illmatic

I wrote this short story in April 2008 while I was living in Miami, finishing FEMINISTA, and then posted it on FB as an album. (Then I deleted all my photos during my FB is Big Brother paranoia.) But I just came across it in my computer and as it’s totally FEM-related and pretty funny, I thought I’d repost!

Ever since I had to stop pumping out chapters (this is the ‘before’ shot from 2 weeks ago) to format manuscript pages for my editor, I’ve fallen out of my rhythm. Now, for the last 5 days (and in my self-flagellating mind this feel like 5 months), I’ve been wallowing in an abyss of inertia. My editor hadn’t called to discuss the pages so I’m having paranoid fantasies that she thinks they’re crap. All 402 pages.

Which doesn’t mean the pages actually are crap. Oh no no no no. To my soft bipolar mind (soft means not in danger of being carried out of my house strapped to a gurney Britney-style..or at least let’s HOPE not), this means she doesn’t GET IT. And now I’m going to have to take up the task of making her GET IT. Because this, I learned when re-reading a book last week called “The Hypomanic Edge: The link between little craziness and a lot of success in America”, is what zealots do in the face of skepticism…

Arguably two of the most talented singers in the record books, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston have made names for themselves as commercially successful pop vocalists.

The careers of the two iconic beauties mirrored each other throughout the 1990s, with many people drawing comparisons between them. (W) Family Feuds: In 2002, associates for Houston’s 81-year-old father, John Houston, sued the pop star for $100 million, claiming unpaid compensation for helping negotiate her Arista Records contact. Houston claimed the dispute arose by people attempting to take advantage of her ailing father, and the suit was later dismissed.

    (M) TV Interviews Gone Wild: In 2001, pushing an ice cream cart, Carey appeared on the popular MTV video countdown show ‘Total Request Live’ for an interview with VJ Carson Daly to promote her ‘Glitter’ movie. Wearing a small T-shirt and booty shorts, Carey performed a striptease and slurred “I just want one day off when I can go swimming and eat ice cream and look at rainbows.” Carey checked into the hospital for exhaustion shortly thereafter.
    (W) TV Interviews Gone Wild: The Whitney Houston quotable “Crack is Wack” came from her infamous Diane Sawyer sit-down in 2002. When questioned about her rumored drug use, the troubled singer asked Sawyer to “show her the receipts” for the drugs, among other things. The interview was one of the last that Houston did before taking a hiatus from the media. Her first televised interview since Sawyer did not come until 2009 with a widely-publicized two-day special appearance on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show.’

    (M) Famous Celebrity Battles: Detroit rapper Eminem and Carey were at one point rumored to be a couple, then things got ugly. She recorded diss records like ‘Clown’ and her current single ‘Obsessed’ aimed at the ‘Slim Shady’ lyricist. And though, the ‘Precious’ star is sticking to her story that she never slept with Eminem, he maintains otherwise. He dished on being intimate with her and replied to her latest hit with a song called ‘The Warning,’ directed at both the singer and her latest husband, Nick Cannon.

    (W) Famous Celebrity Battles: Houston and radio-shock-jock-turned-talk-show-host Wendy Williams had an on-air beef that played out in 2003 in which Williams questioned Houston about her rumored drug use. Houston responded with curse words, most notably charging, “If this were back in the day in Newark, I’d meet you outside, but not now, because I’m a lady with class.” The New York Times best-selling author has since said she has buried the hatchet and is eager to have the ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ singer on her syndicated talk show.

    Mariah Carey: Through The Years
    Mariah Carey: Through The Years
Since releasing her 1990 debut, Mariah Carey has survived a highly publicized divorce, getting dropped from one of the most lucrative recording contracts in music history and even a stint of exhaustion. But she returned to the top of the charts with one of the most successful albums in the past five years. On the cusp of her new ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel’ album release, Blackvoices.com pays homage to the best-selling female artist of all time.

    Mariah Through The Years

      Mariah Through The Years:
For Mariah Carey, having more number one songs than any solo artist in America has been a credit to the company that this five-time Grammy winner has kept since making her music debut in 1990. From people behind the scenes like L.A. Reid and Jermaine Dupri to some of her past loves like Tommy Mottola, Derek Jeter and now husband Nick Cannon, each man has played a significant role in inspiring the music that has made this 39 year-old singer/songwriter famous. Blackvoices.com takes a look at the men who have inspired Mariah Carey over the years.

      Tommy Mottola – Husband
No one is more responsible for Mariah Carey’s success than former Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola. After receiving Carey’s demo from artist Brenda K. Starr, for whom Carey sang backup, he signed her on the spot. While recording her 1990 debut, the two became romantically involved and tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in 1993. Just three short years later, they split, and a divorce was finalized in 1998.

      Luther Vandross – Musical Collaborator
The five-octave singer was fortunate enough to be one of the few entertainers to record a duet with the late Luther Vandross. Their cover of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross‘s ‘Endless Love’ became Vandross’ biggest pop hit. It was the second single released from his ‘Songs’ album and was also included on two Carey albums: ‘Greatest Hits’ in 2001 and ‘The Ballads’ in 2008.

      Trey Lorenz – Backup Singer
In 1992, Carey performed an MTV ‘Unplugged’ special to show nonbelievers that she was not a studio singer. Her cover of the Jackson 5‘s ‘I’ll Be There’ with her longtime backup singer Trey Lorenz was later released as a single and became a number-one hit in the United States. Lorenz was able to score a record deal from the duet, and Carey co-produced his debut. On July 7 of this year, the two performed the song at the Michael Jackson memorial, which was held at the Los Angeles Staples Center.

      Jermaine Dupri – Producer
It’s not a well-known fact that Jermaine Dupri has been working with Carey for nearly 15 years. In 1995, Carey worked with the So So Def Records founder on ‘Always Be My Baby,’ from her ‘Daydream’ album. It became the most successful record on U.S. radio that year. And though these two worked on several remixes together over the years, their magic came a decade later when J.D. produced four songs on ‘The Emancipation of Mimi,’ Carey’s 10th studio album and most successful to date.

      ODB – Musical Collaborator
Since rapping ‘Me and Mariah go back like babies and pacifiers,’ Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the late Wu Tang Clan MC, helped solidify Carey in the world of hip-hop and R&B. The 1995 remix to ‘Fantasy’ became a number-one hit. The friendship between Carey and ODB lasted throughout the years. The songstress even met the rapper upon his release from jail in 2003.

      Mase – Musical Collaborator
‘Honey’ was Carey’s 12th number-one song. Before turning his life over to God and becoming a minster, Bad Boy rapper Mase appeared on the popular remix of the record, alongside the Lox and Diddy. The song, which also had its own video, was featured on Carey’s 2003 remix compilations, aptly titled ‘The Remixes.’

      Derek Jeter – Alleged Beau
Shortly after divorcing husband Tommy Mottola in 1998, the five-time Grammy award winner met New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter at a Fresh Air Fund gala in New York. The couple connected over their interracial parents – black fathers and Irish mothers. The public romance ended short of the one-year mark. In an interview with Parade magazine, Carey said “It was the wrong time. …Our two worlds were just too much for that moment.”

      Eminem – Alleged Beau
From ‘Clown’ to ‘Obsessed,’ Carey has documented her disdain for Detroit MC Eminem in her music. The ‘Glitter’ actress denies they ever slept together, but Slim Shady has consistently rapped that the two were intimate. The rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, sent threats to Carey via the 2009 diss track ‘The Warning,’ which was directed at both Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon.

      Nick Cannon – Husband
Nick Cannon, 28, dated singer-actress Christina Milian and was even engaged to Victoria’s Secret model Selita Eubanks for five months before becoming Carey’s second husband. In 2005, he convinced the Teen Choice Awards to let him present Carey’s award for ‘The Emancipation of Mimi.’ Two years passed, and the couple was reunited in 2007. Their whirlwind romance resulted in a quickie wedding in 2008 at Carey’s Bahamian estate, Windermere.

  • Beyonce: The Muslims Have Problems With ‘Sexy Performances’

Despite an abrupt cancellation of her 2007 concert in Malaysia, due to protesters threatening to disrupt it because of her sexual image, Beyonce Knowles will finally take the stage on Oct. 25 in the country’s biggest city, Kuala Lumpur.

However, according to the Associated Press, the Grammy Award-winning superstar still isn’t receiving the ‘Diva’ treatment that she’s accustomed to: earlier this week, beyonce Sabki Yusof, head of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, stated that his organization would send a protest note to the government over the singer’s show.

The country enforces and requires all female performers to cover up from the shoulders to knees with no cleavage showing.

“We are not against entertainment as long as it is within the framework of our culture and our religion,” Yusof said. “We are against Western sexy performances. We don’t think our people need that.”

Sounds like Bey may be too ‘Bootylicious’ for Malaysia’s own good!

“Not many people outside of a President or a government official get welcomed to a country with a mass protest,” black celebrity blogger Natasha Eubanks (and owner of the popular website Young, Black & Fabulous) told Black Voices. “For that reason alone, Beyonce and her Sasha Fierce glove need to make their way to Malaysia and give the best show she’s ever done. Just because she can. Chick’s not about to pop out Shawn Jr.’s anytime soon, so I need something other than her bedazzled lace-front [wig] to gossip about.”

Although Yusof and his organization attempts to protest Knowles, her website has confirmed her performance in the Muslim-majority country: “Beyoncé for the first time ever has decided to make Malaysia part of her ‘I Am’ World Tour.”

Luckily for the ‘Dreamgirls’ actress, she’s not the only artist to experience backlash from Islamic activists and their strict dress code. Most recently Muslims in Malaysia were banned from attending the Black Eyed Peas‘ concert, which is scheduled for this weekend, because it was sponsored by Irish beer giant Guinness. The ban has since been lifted and the company will not be allowed to sell its beer or use its logo in publicity material.

      3/3/09: Diddy
When it comes to making an event out of an album, Diddy sure knows how to put on a show. And for his forthcoming project, ‘Last Train to Paris,’ the multitalented mogul is following in the vein of Prince‘s classic flick and album ‘Purple Rain.’ “It’s definitely going to be an album you can seamlessly see,” he recently told MTV News. “Not after the fact. When you get the album on that day, September 22, you will be able to see the whole album on your computer. … You know how when you’re on your computer and you’re listening to an album, you have your screen saver on instead of screen save, you’ll be able to see the album in motion. And the presentation of the album will be different from the videos.” Hopefully, Diddy will make it in time on Sept. 22 to catch the ‘Last Train to Paris’ once the album hits stores.

      3/3/09: Janet Jackson
Recently there has been speculation that Janet Jackson was likely to sign a new multirights deal with Live Nation. However, contrary to reports, Live Nation senior VP of communications John Vlautin denied the claim. “We have not signed a deal with Janet, nor are we currently in discussions with the artist,” Vlautin said. Jackson departed from her former label, Island Def Jam, in September, 14 months after signing to the record company.

      3/3/09: Black Eyed Peas
Despite previous reports that Grammy Award-winning pop group Black Eyed Peas would release a new album, ‘The E.N.D.’ (The Energy Never Dies), in March, it now appears Will.i.am and company will release the project on June 9. Billboard reports that the album’s first single, ‘Boom Boom Pow,’ will soon be released, and that the group is planning an international tour. Will.i.am, the Black Eyed Peas front man, described the album as having “a lot of dance stuff, real melodic, electronic, soulful. We call it, like, electric static funk, something like that.”

      2/27/09: MC Hammer
MC Hammer is back! This time the multiplatinum-selling rapper is heading to network television for his new unscripted A&E reality series ‘Hammertime.’ Hammer’s new half-hour series will feature Hammer, his wife and five children – reminiscent of the Huxtable family from ‘The Cosby Show,’ says executive producer J.D. Roth. “Here’s a dad with five kids, married to the same woman for more than 23 years, living in the same place where he grew up and going to church every Sunday,” Roth says. “He’s had his ups and downs, and it’s what makes him such a character you root for.” MC Hammer’s ‘Hammertime’ is set to premiere on A&E later this year.

      2/27/09: Jazmine Sullivan
Although she didn’t walk away with an award at this year’s Grammys, singer-songwriter Jazmine Sullivan is bound for Hollywood for her upcoming film ‘Red Tails.’ According to Billboard, Sullivan will travel to Prague to start shooting the film, which is based on the story of the Tuskegee Airmen. “I play a singer who entertains soldiers,” she said. “I’m really just entertainment for them, but I kind of get a little relationship going with one of them. So that’s very exciting.” As for now, Sullivan has an exciting relationship going on with R&B crooner Ne-Yo — on tour that is. The two are currently touring through March 1. At press time, there was no release date for ‘Red Tails.’

      2/27/09: Tupac
With the Notorious B.I.G.‘s biopic in the can, fans are now anticipating a biographical movie on his rival Tupac. Unfortunately, fans may have to wait a little longer before a Tupac flick hits the silver screen. A legal dispute has surfaced involving the production company Morgan Creek and Amaru Entertainment, the company run by Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur. The lawsuit, which was filed by Morgan Creek, states that Amaru Entertainment reneged on an agreement to sell the rapper’s life rights for a movie. Amaru Entertainment released a statement clarifying the recent media reports: “This lawsuit has no merit. We felt it was important to bring the story of Tupac Shakur, one of music’s most remarkable icons, to life onscreen, and in realizing this vision, we sought to find the best partner who would be true to Tupac’s vision and bring his unique story to life on the big screen. In doing so, we have taken every step to ensure that our partner in this process is committed to the integrity of Tupac Shakur’s legacy and, more importantly, that they are the right people. To that end, we have been in discussions and negotiations with several major studios and production companies, including Morgan Creek Productions. However, at no time did we have an agreement with Morgan Creek.”

  • Trey Songz Drives The Cougars Wild

    Posted by: BlogXilla

Still in NYC on his promo tour for his new album Ready, Trey arose early to hit up WPIX’s morning show. Watch as the host struggles to maintain her composure amidst a chest so exquisite it could make Ellen DeGeneres reconsider her…ummm…choices. The poor thing was sweating and stuttering.
