  • Motor City Overhaul

When black enterprise announced its decision to have its 2009 Entrepreneurs Conference + Expo in Detroit, the move raised more than a few eyebrows. After all, if the nation was in a recession at the time, surely Detroit must be in a full-fledged depression. The automotive industry—the city’s lifeblood—was facing its worst business climate ever, prompting massive layoffs, restructurings, and, in General Motors’ case, bankruptcy. The city, which was struggling prior to the events in the auto industry, had to contend with high rates of unemployment and poverty as well as real estate values that had plummeted to the point where a significant portion of the population found their mortgage balance exceeded the value of their homes.

  • Banks Offer College Saving Deals: Are These The Best Financing Plans?

Banks and credit unions are developing new methods of helping families finance college educations. In this economy, families have seen certain accounts set aside for financing education, such as those funded by stock portfolios, steeply decline in value. On top of that, tuition costs at top schools have increased by 62% over the past ten years, cutting sharply into education savings. To help families cope with these trends, “a growing number of financial institutions are rolling out incentives to help families save or pay for higher education,” according to USA Today.

Two examples of these college saving offerings include:

Citizens Bank is giving a $1,000 bonus to consumers who open a college savings account by a child’s sixth birthday. Justice Federal Credit Union – which serves Department of Justice and Homeland Security employees – is offering a discount on a loan to pay for college costs. And Grow Financial Federal Credit Union in Tampa is donating money to student scholarships based on a local university football team’s “return yards,” which is how far players run with the ball after receiving a punt or kick. (USA Today)

A new college saving deal offered by your bank may be the right thing for your family. Yet, financial experts urge consumers to carefully evaluate any college saving incentive. The motive for lending institutions to create these deals is to build better relationships with a future generation of customers. The student of today will need loans for grown-up purchases like houses once a college education is fully financed. Thus a bank’s offering may not necessarily be in your best interest. You will still want to shop around for college savings plans that net you and your student the best deal.

What are some additional ways of saving for and paying for college during tough economic times? State 529 plans are one important tool in a parent’s arsenal for paying for college, and should be explored fully. Please see SmartMoney.com for more great college saving advice.

"I was out there having fun, man, honestly," Jackson said. "My ankle was kind of hurting. I really didn't feel it, but it did kind of affect my dance a little bit.

Tyler Perry: Responds to Spike Lee

With eight consistent films under his belt, Tyler Perry has overcome the odds of not only his upbringing but also setting the bar as one of Hollywood’s most relentless and profitable directors. As his dear friend and mentor, Oprah Winfrey recently stated, “Do not play him small, because he is not some lucky rich negro!” This and much more was all discussed on tonight’s episode of the long-running newsmagazine show ’60 Minutes,’ where the critically acclaimed director-actor discussed an array of topics including being abused by his father, Emmitt, as a child to firing back at Spike Lee‘s controversial comments comparing Perry’s body of work to “coonery and buffoonery.”

Check out a video clip of Tyler Perry’s reaction to Spike Lee below.

Los Angeles Angels' Scott Kazmir(notes) walks off the field after being relieved by Jered Weaver(notes) during the eighth inning of Game 6 of the American League Championship baseball series Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, in New York. The Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 to win the American League Championship.

They dashed from the dugout and in from the outfield, swarming Alex Rodriguez in a sea of pinstripes only steps from his spot at third base. "I couldn't be more excited," he said. "I feel like a 10-year-old kid." Making it to the World Series for the first time after all those misses will do that to you.

The Cardinals won the game 24-17.

The Arizona Cardinals conquered their House of Horrors with a new approach: scary defense. A team built around the passing of Kurt Warner and receiving of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin could be downright dominant with a stingy defense. And it sure wasn't the offense that carried the Cardinals to just their third win in 18 visits to the Meadowlands, 24-17 over the New York Giants on Sunday…

  • Maybe You Should Re-Think Sex With An Ex

    Posted by: BlogXilla

Having sexual relations with someone who you are no longer with, usually sounds like it is not such a good idea. Since that person is indeed in the past, it kind of gives you the sense that you are moving backwards, even if it is just for intercourse. Anyone you have had some kind of history with, complicated or not, will make it almost impossible to not re hatch these feelings during some late night rendezvous. I know I may get a backlash for this, but women, we know that along with sex there are times we also develop an attachment and/or emotion with that person we have chose to bring back in our bedroom. Now add an EX into the equation, and it further complicates things. Which is ironic, because “X” in mathematical terms, means nothing, so when it comes to sex, why does the X mean so much?

  • RIP Mermaid Girl

    Posted by: The Connector

Yes, it is a sad day. The ten year old little girl, named Shiloh Pepin, known as the mermaid girl has died. The little girl was born with a disease known as mermaid syndrome died on Friday after catching a cold that progressively worsened until she had pneumonia. The girl when she was born was not expected to live more than a few days, but somehow she managed to live on til the age of ten. A story of strength and courage to be sure.

The little girl won the hearts of many after appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show and having her own documentary on TLC. Shiloh never had the surgery that could separate her legs from each other. Her legs were fused in such a way that major blood vessels would have been damaged and the operation would have caused her death.

Her mother had the following to say about her daughter Shiloh “She was a tough little thing.” I think that right there is an understatement. Rest in peace, Little Mermaid. \
